Description
Harald, known as Halldor in some versions, is a character from the later episodes of the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. He serves as the leader and founder of Team Ragnarok, a group that competes in the World Racing Grand Prix tournament. Harald is a man of significant presence, marked by his distinctive blue hair and a calm, composed demeanor that often belies his inner intensity. His background is deeply rooted in a sense of destiny and ancient power, as he is the inheritor of a family legacy tied to the Nordic gods. His family had passed down the powerful card Polar God Sacred Emperor Odin, also known as Odin, Father of the Aesir, for generations. As a child, Harald embarked on a journey to prove himself worthy of Odin, a quest that resulted in him awakening the Ansuz Rune Eye, an F-shaped mark that grants him special perception abilities.
Prior to his involvement in card games, Harald served as a military pilot with the rank of colonel, a background that has earned him the nickname "the Colonel." His life changed when, during a flight, a mysterious storm threatened to make him crash. At that moment, his Rune Eye manifested, allowing him to see through the clouds and avoid the disaster. This event sparked his interest in Norse mythology, and he eventually found Odin in the roots of a great tree. Driven by a vision that the world was facing an immense crisis, Harald made the decision to abandon his military career to fulfill a greater mission. He used his abilities to seek out the other two inheritors of the remaining Rune Eyes and the other Polar Gods, Dragan and Brave, forming Team Ragnarok to revive the power of the three Aesir gods and save the world.
In terms of personality, Harald is widely regarded as a wise and intelligent individual, often compared to Odin himself for his knowledge. Outside of a duel, he is notably calm, respectful, and even gentle, carrying himself with a formal and composed dignity. However, his personality shifts drastically once he engages in a Duel, where he becomes openly emotional, prideful, and haughty. This change is almost instantaneous, and he tends to refer to himself with a self-aggrandizing phrase befitting his status as Odin's chosen duelist, contrasting with his more humble speech patterns at other times. Despite his initial pride, he is deeply protective of his teammates and values the bonds he shares with them. While he is a firm believer in fate, he is not unreasonable and is capable of changing his perspective when presented with new evidence.
Harald's role in the story is primarily as a rival and, later, a crucial ally to the main characters. During the WRGP, Team Ragnarok is positioned as a formidable opponent for Team 5D's in the semifinals. Initially, Harald refuses an offer of cooperation from Yusei Fudo, leader of Team 5D's. This refusal is rooted in his belief that Yusei carries a destiny of destruction because Yusei's father created the Ener-D reactor that led to the Zero Reverse disaster. Harald declares that the semifinal match will determine which team is fated to fight the true antagonists, Yliaster. In his duel against Yusei, Harald demonstrates his strategic genius, quickly summoning his ace monster, Odin, and using powerful trap cards like Odin's Eye to gain a overwhelming advantage. He forces Yusei into a corner, but ultimately acknowledges Yusei's skill and the power of the Crimson Dragon when Yusei manages to defeat him.
Following this defeat, Harald undergoes a significant development. He uses his Rune Eye to perceive the Crimson Dragon behind Yusei and his Shooting Star Dragon, taking it as proof that the Aesir now recognize Yusei and his friends as worthy comrades. He concludes that Yusei's fate will not bring destruction, but rather a path to a brighter future. This respect transforms him into a key ally. When the massive floating fortress known as the Divine Temple, or Ark Cradle, appears and threatens to destroy the city, Harald and his team are the only ones who can create a path to it. He explains the legend of the Rainbow Bridge Bifrost, a path that connects the human world to the divine realm. By syncing their Duel Runners with the Ener-D reactor and summoning the three Aesir, Harald succeeds in manifesting Bifrost as a bridge across the sky, allowing Team 5D's to reach the fortress, even as his own machine is destroyed in the process.
Notable abilities are a central part of Harald's character. His primary power is the Ansuz Rune Eye, which shares many similarities with the Crimson Dragon's birthmarks. This eye allows him to see through any illusion or danger, protects him from harm, and lets him perceive the flow of fate and energy. In a duel, this translates to incredible analytical skills and the ability to see through his opponent's strategies. His deck is a Nordic Ascendant deck, which focuses on summoning his ace monster, Odin, Father of the Aesir. This monster is the strongest of the three Aesir synchro monsters and possesses the ability to negate all spell and trap cards for the turn, as well as revive itself from the graveyard. Harald's dueling style is highly strategic, relying on this powerful boss monster combined with various lockdown trap cards to control the game and overwhelm his opponents.
