Description
In the Japanese version of the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, the character known as Bommer is referred to as Greiger in the English adaptation. He is a tall, muscular man with long black hair, dark skin suggesting origins from the southwestern Americas, and a stoic demeanor. He is often seen wearing a large brown vest, white pants, and a belt buckle bearing the letter "B." During Turbo Duels, he rides a customized, beast-like Duel Runner and wears a helmet resembling an animal's head with horns.
Bommer grew up in a poor, destitute village alongside his younger siblings, a brother named Max and a sister named Annie. His past mirrors that of Crow Hogan, as he learned to read and write using Duel Monsters cards and took care of the children in his village. He is a descendant of the Star People, a clan that once served the Crimson Dragon. Despite his intimidating and massive physique, Bommer is fundamentally an honorable, proud, and kind-hearted individual. He values his family above all else and entered high-stakes dueling tournaments primarily to secure financial aid for his impoverished hometown.
Bommer first appears as a participant in the Fortune Cup tournament. His initial motivation is to win the competition so that Rex Goodwin would provide KaibaCorp resources to revitalize his destroyed village. However, during his semifinal match against Yusei Fudo, he receives a false communication leading him to believe that Goodwin and Yliaster were responsible for his village's destruction as part of an experiment to summon the Crimson Dragon. After losing the duel to Yusei, his rage and despair consume him. He attempts to assassinate Rex Goodwin with his Duel Runner but is stopped and subsequently arrested by Sector Security.
While being transported, Bommer is freed by the Dark Signers. Blinded by his desire for vengeance against Yliaster, he accepts Roman Goodwin's offer to join them. He is killed and resurrected as a Dark Signer, gaining the dark mark of the Killer Whale and the power to control the Earthbound Immortal Chacu Challhua. As a Dark Signer, his personality shifts dramatically; he becomes aggressive, impulsive, and singularly focused on revenge.
His role becomes antagonistic as he hunts for Yusei, only to be intercepted by Crow Hogan. During their Shadow Turbo Duel, the truth is revealed: the Earthbound Immortals, not Yliaster, were the true destroyers of his village. When Chacu Challhua was summoned, it consumed the souls of his siblings and the other children from his home. Upon discovering this horrifying truth, Bommer is overwhelmed with guilt and attempts to forfeit the duel. However, the Earthbound Immortal takes control of his body and forces him to continue fighting. Crow defeats him, freeing the trapped souls. In his final moments as a Dark Signer, Bommer sacrifices himself to save Crow from falling debris, crumbling into dust but dying happy knowing his family is free.
Following the defeat of the Dark Signers' leader, Bommer is restored to life. He returns to his family but chooses to travel to the Nazca region to atone for his sins. He builds a shrine to suppress the remaining power of the Earthbound Immortals and dedicates himself to monitoring them. In this later arc, he serves as an ally, using his knowledge of ancient history to help Yusei and Jack Atlas understand the threat of the Crimson Devil. He demonstrates his growth by setting aside his past rage, focusing on protection and redemption rather than revenge.
Bommer is a skilled and strategic duelist known for his aggressive, burn-oriented strategy. His primary deck is the Reactor series, which focuses on summoning Flying Fortress SKY FIRE. This deck capitalizes on punishing the opponent for performing basic actions like summoning monsters or activating Spell and Trap Cards, inflicting 800 points of damage each time. His key monsters include Summon Reactor SK, Trap Reactor Y FI, and Spell Reactor RE, which combine to summon his ace monster. As a Dark Signer, his abilities expand to include summoning the Earthbound Immortal Chacu Challhua, a god-like card that can attack directly and prevent the opponent from entering their Battle Phase while in Defense Position. He also utilizes Synchro monsters like Dark Strike Fighter and Dark Flattop.
