Aki Izayoi, also known in some adaptations as Akiza Izinski, is a central character and one of the five Signers, duelists chosen to bear the marks of a legendary dragon. She is initially introduced under the fearsome alias of the Black Rose Witch, a persona born from pain and isolation. Physically, Aki is a teenage girl with fair skin, brown eyes, and distinctive dark burgundy hair, which she wears with long, elbow-length bangs framing her face and a curler-like device or hairpin on top of her head. Her usual attire includes a low-cut red corset with puffy sleeves, a sleeveless magenta trench coat, dark elbow-length gloves, and a red neck choker with a golden cross-shaped medallion. Aki is a Psychic Duelist with the ability to physically manifest the monsters and effects of Duel Monsters cards, making damage a real-world consequence. This power is intrinsically linked to her emotions, often surging out of control when she is angry or distressed. Her early life was marked by tragedy: at age five, during a duel with her father Hideo, her abilities manifested and unintentionally injured him. His shocked reaction, calling her a monster, created a deep emotional wound. As her uncontrollable powers caused further accidents, she became isolated from her family and peers. She was sent to Duel Academy, but the incidents continued. After running away from home and using her powers to destroy her family home, she entered the world of underground dueling as the Black Rose Witch, wearing a tattered black cloak and mask. This path led her to the Arcadia Movement, an organization led by a manipulative figure who claimed to support psychic duelists but instead encouraged her rage for his own ambitions. Her encounter with Yusei Fudo became the catalyst for change. He did not fear her, challenged her worldview, and helped her confront her inner turmoil, showing her a path toward acceptance and self-control. Following this turning point, Aki’s demeanor softens considerably. She becomes a loyal and caring friend to Yusei and the others, including the younger twins Rua and Ruka, and values her newfound friendships. Her feelings for Yusei deepen over time, and she overcomes her fears to earn a license for Turbo Duels. As a Signer, Aki bears the Claw mark of the dragon on her right arm. She uses a Plant-type deck focused on her ace monster, Black Rose Dragon, with strategies involving field control and destruction. After the main conflicts, she dedicates her life to healing others, eventually becoming a doctor.
