Description
Kiryu Kyosuke, also known as Kalin Kessler in some versions, is a character from the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's narrative who undergoes a profound transformation from a heroic figure to a vengeful antagonist and ultimately finds a path to redemption. He is a young man of 19 years, standing 184 centimeters tall, with a birthday on November 1st. His physical appearance changes significantly to reflect his evolving mental state. Initially, as the leader of the legendary satellite-based dueling team known as the Enforcers, or Team Satisfaction, he has a straightforward look with blue-gray hair tied with a bandana and a sleeveless vest over a red shirt. After his fall from grace and resurrection as a Dark Signer, his appearance becomes more menacing; his eyes darken, a red mark appears on his right cheek, and he wears the flowing dark robe of the Dark Signers with blue stripes. Following his defeat and revival, his look softens into a western cowboy style, with longer hair, a gray duster coat, a harmonica, and the mark on his face changing back to a yellow hue.

Kiryu's background is central to his character. He was the founder and leader of Team Satisfaction, a group that included a young Yusei Fudo, Jack Atlas, and Crow Hogan. In the oppressive environment of the Satellite, he gave his friends hope and purpose, leading them to conquer every duel gang in the area. His motivation was to create order and protect what they had earned, but victory led to obsession. He became paranoid, believing any gang not under his control was a threat, and began dueling recklessly. This escalating behavior caused Jack and Crow to leave the team. Ultimately, after a confrontation with Sector Security where he severely injured an officer, Yusei arrived and tried to take the blame. However, Security arrested Kiryu, who mistakenly believed that Yusei had betrayed him.

In prison, Kiryu was cruelly beaten and had his precious deck confiscated, breaking his spirit. In his despair, he accepted a proposition from an entity from the underworld, becoming a Dark Signer to exact revenge on Yusei. His personality at this stage is defined by madness, hatred, and a thirst for vengeance. He is no longer the caring leader but a crazed individual who laughs hysterically at the pain of others, particularly his former teammates. He frequently uses his catchphrase, "satisfaction," demanding that his duels and his revenge bring him fulfillment. His driving motivation as a Dark Signer is to make Yusei suffer the same pain and betrayal he felt, seeing their final duel as the last battle for Team Satisfaction.

His role in the story is pivotal as the first Dark Signer to confront Yusei. He serves as a dark mirror to the protagonist, showing what Yusei could have become if consumed by bitterness. He nearly defeats Yusei in their first Shadow Duel, which is only interrupted by a mechanical failure of Yusei's Duel Runner. In their rematch, Yusei manages to break through Kiryu's hatred, defeating his Earthbound Immortal, Ccapac Apu. In his final moments as a Dark Signer, he reveals that his desire for revenge was not his only goal; he also wanted to carry out the last duel of Team Satisfaction, demonstrating the lingering bond he felt.

After the Dark Signers are defeated and Rex Goodwin is vanquished, Kiryu is revived as a normal human. Overwhelmed with guilt and unable to forget the pain he caused, he travels to a lawless town called Crash Town, seeking a place to die as atonement. He becomes a respected dueling sensei there, but his goal is to lose and be sent to the deadly mines. Yusei follows him, and through their shared ordeal, Yusei helps Kiryu rediscover his will to live. After defeating the town's corrupt ruler, Kiryu decides to stay and rebuild the settlement, renaming it Satisfaction Town to honor his past with his friends and find a new purpose.

Kiryu's key relationships are the core of his development, most importantly with Yusei Fudo. Their bond evolves from close friendship and loyalty to bitter hatred and betrayal, and finally to forgiveness and mutual respect. His relationships with Jack Atlas and Crow Hogan are similarly complex; they were his original teammates who left due to his extremism, but they ultimately return to aid him in his redemption. The children Nico and West from Crash Town also play a crucial role, as his desire to protect them helps rekindle his sense of self-worth.

As a duelist, Kiryu is known for his exceptional skill and his use of the Infernity archetype. The Infernity deck is characterized by a high-risk, high-reward strategy that requires the player to have no cards in their hand to activate its most powerful effects, reflecting Kiryu's willingness to sacrifice everything for victory. During his time as a Dark Signer, his arsenal includes the Earthbound Immortal Ccapac Apu, a god-like monster that can attack directly, and the dark synchro monster Hundred Eyes Dragon, which can copy the abilities of monsters in the graveyard. After his revival, he continues to use the Infernity deck, relying on monsters such as Infernity Doom Dragon and Infernity Archfiend. He is also noted for his physical prowess and is even capable of knocking out an opponent with a single gut punch, a testament to his hard life in the Satellite.
