Description
Kagemaru is a central antagonist in the first story arc of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, serving as the leader of the Shadow Riders and the former chairman of Duel Academy. He is a very old man, having lived over a century, and his advanced age has left him in poor health to the point where he requires a life support system to survive. Initially, his body is frail, with a long white beard and hair, and he is kept alive within a stasis tube equipped with robotic limbs.
Kagemaru's primary motivation is his desperate wish to regain his lost youth and achieve immortality. This desire drives him to revive the three powerful and ancient cards known as the Sacred Beasts. By sacrificing Duel Monster Spirits to these creatures, he plans to absorb their energy to rejuvenate himself. To this end, he founded Duel Academy, not merely as a school, but as a means to cultivate a space filled with the fighting spirit of duelists, which would provide the necessary energy to break the seal on the Sacred Beasts. He also recruited the six other Shadow Riders, each possessing a Shadow Charm, to help him gather the seven Spirit Keys needed to unlock the beasts. Throughout the first season, his machinations are felt from the shadows, as he directs operations and tests key individuals through a computer screen.
In terms of personality, Kagemaru is initially portrayed as cunning, ruthless, and manipulative. He treats the other Shadow Riders as disposable pawns on a chessboard, using them to achieve his own selfish goals. Despite his ruthlessness, he shows a measure of respect and confidence in powerful duelists like Camula, whom he refers to as his vampire friend. During his final duel against Jaden Yuki, his personality shifts as he begins to rejuvenate. Regaining his youth makes him arrogant and boastful, as he feels invincible with the power of the Sacred Beasts at his command. However, after his defeat, he undergoes a significant change. He reverts to his aged state, sincerely asks for forgiveness from Jaden, and promises to renounce his former ways. He explains that seeing young people duel passionately rekindled his own desire for youth and that he has now found a different kind of fulfillment. In a comedic moment after the duel, Jaden accidentally crushes his spine with a bear hug, requiring him to be air-lifted to a hospital.
Kagemaru's role in the story is that of the primary antagonist for the first season's Seven Stars arc. He is the mastermind behind all the conflicts, orchestrating the attacks on the key keepers. His most critical relationship is with the protagonist, Jaden Yuki. He observes Jaden from early on and ultimately chooses to duel only him. This duel is the climax of the arc, where Jaden must overcome the fully revived Sacred Beasts. Kagemaru also has a key relationship with Chancellor Sheppard, as he taunts him about the Academy's losses and it is later revealed that the former chairman gave the seven Spirit Keys to the chancellor for safekeeping. He also secretly supported the alchemy research of Professor Banner.
Kagemaru experiences a clear character development from a villain consumed by a selfish desire for eternal life to a remorseful and repentant elder. He appears again much later in the fourth season, having survived his ordeal now using a wheelchair, to warn Jaden and his friends of a new impending crisis, showing that he has truly reformed and now seeks to atone for his past actions.
In terms of notable abilities, Kagemaru is a formidable duelist who specializes in a Sacred Beast Deck. This deck is built around summoning the three legendary monsters: Uria, Lord of Searing Flames, which gains power from Trap Cards in the graveyard; Hamon, Lord of Striking Thunder, which draws power from Continuous Spell Cards; and Raviel, Lord of Phantasms, which is summoned by tributing Fiend-type monsters. He uses a powerful Field Spell Card, Fallen Paradise, which allows him to draw two extra cards per turn as long as he controls a Sacred Beast. During his duel with Jaden, the absorption of Duel Spirits by the Sacred Beasts physically transforms him back into a tall, muscular, and youthful man with dark hair, granting him superhuman strength. As the leader of the Shadow Riders, he also possesses a Shadow Charm in the form of a small ring.
