Description
Jun Manjōme, known as Chazz Princeton in English adaptations, is a central figure at Duel Academy who begins his journey as an arrogant and elite student but undergoes significant personal transformation. He is the youngest of three brothers in a wealthy and powerful family, with his siblings controlling political and financial empires, which places immense pressure on him to become the leading figure in the world of dueling to further the family name.
Initially, Manjōme is a selfish duelist who believes he is part of an untouchable elite. He looks down on others and is determined to prove his superiority, relying on powerful rare cards provided by instructor Vellian Crowler. However, his pride is shattered by early defeats at the hands of Jaden Yuki and Bastion Misawa. Humiliated and confused, he leaves Duel Academy and transfers to North Academy. There, he defeats the top students and becomes the school's king, adopting his signature catchphrase "Manjōme Thunder". Upon his return to Duel Academy as the North representative, he is defeated by Jaden again, but this loss becomes a turning point. Realizing his mistakes, he begins to take charge of his own life and is welcomed back, though he is forced to restart as a lowly Slifer Red student.
As his character evolves, Manjōme transitions from a duelist who respected only raw power to one who finds value in any card. His primary motivation shifts from family-mandated success to proving himself on his own terms and becoming a true rival to Jaden. A key part of his growth involves his reluctant partnership with the Ojama Trio, a group of weak and comic duel monster spirits. He initially finds them annoying, but they become his loyal spirit partners and help redefine his dueling philosophy. His role in the story is that of a primary rival and foil to Jaden, though he also serves as a significant source of comic relief. Despite his bravado, he is a highly talented duelist, capable of defeating his older brother even with a deck of weak monsters, and is chosen as a keykeeper to protect the Sacred Beast cards.
Key relationships heavily influence his path. His rivalry with Jaden Yuki is the most central, having dueled him more times than anyone else. It evolves from pure disdain to a begrudging respect. He has a persistent, one-sided crush on Alexis Rhodes, which often leads to comedic moments as he constantly seeks her attention. His relationship with his older brothers, Slade and Jagger, is antagonistic, as they represent the oppressive expectations he rebels against. His strongest bonds, however, may be with his duel spirit partners, the Ojama Trio, who admire him and help him stay true to himself.
Manjōme undergoes a dark development in his second year. After losing a duel to Sartorius, he is brainwashed into joining the Society of Light, becoming "White Thunder". In this state, he discards his Ojama cards for a new White Knight deck and ruthlessly converts other students. He is eventually freed by Jaden, who uses the Ojamas to remind him of his true self. He tears off his white coat, reclaims his black jacket, and becomes "Black Thunder" once more. In later seasons, he continues to struggle with his identity and family legacy but ultimately resolves to become a professional duelist on his own merit. He even dons an Ojama costume to defeat Aster Phoenix, cementing his acceptance of the cards that represent his unique path.
Notably, Manjōme's abilities are as distinctive as his personality. He is famous for his chant, "One, ten, hundred, thousand, Manjōme Thunder," which became an enduring nickname. He pilots several unique decks, most famously the Ojama archetype, which focuses on swarming the field and blocking the opponent's monster zones, as well as the Armed Dragon series, a powerful lineup of Wind-attribute dragons that level up. In the manga continuity, his characterization differs significantly; he is depicted as a stoic and solitary duelist who wields the powerful Light and Darkness Dragon as his spirit partner and serves as the story's deuteragonist.
