Description
Asuka Tenjōin, known as Alexis Rhodes in some versions, is a central character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. She is a highly skilled and respected student at Duel Academy, where she resides in and is considered the top female duelist of the Obelisk Blue dormitory. Her reputation has earned her the informal title of the Queen of Obelisk Blue, yet she does not act arrogantly or look down on students from other dorms, distinguishing her from many of her peers.

Physically, Asuka has long, dark blonde hair that she wears loose with a large portion tied up at the back, and brown eyes. Her standard attire is the female Obelisk Blue uniform, a white sleeveless vest and short blue skirt, which she complements with a pair of distinctive fingerless gloves. Her birthday is on May 5, and she is fifteen years old at the start of the series.

Asuka's personality is defined by her confidence, kindness, and strong sense of resolve. She is brave and willing to take significant risks to help her friends, though she typically remains more reserved than some of the other main characters. She takes her studies and her duties as a duelist seriously, but she is not motivated by a desire for superiority. Due to her beauty, she frequently receives romantic attention from male students, but she consistently rejects these advances, stating she is not looking for a boyfriend and is more focused on dueling. While she develops a close friendship with the protagonist Jaden Yuki, her romantic feelings for him are subtle and, in the original version, largely unspoken until late in the series.

The primary motivation driving Asuka in the early part of the story is finding her older brother, Atticus Rhodes, who mysteriously disappeared from Duel Academy sometime before her enrollment. She secretly investigates the abandoned dormitory on the island for clues, a quest that brings her into contact with Jaden and his friends. Her search culminates in a Shadow Game against Titan, where she wins not only the duel but also the restoration of her brother's lost memories.

Throughout the series, Asuka's role evolves from a respected upperclassman to a core member of Jaden's circle of allies. She is chosen as one of the seven key keepers to protect the Spirit Keys from the Shadow Riders, demonstrating the trust placed in her abilities. In the second year, she falls under the influence of the Society of Light after being defeated by Chazz Princeton. Under this control, her personality becomes cold and arrogant, and she is given a new White Night Deck by the arc's antagonist, Sartorius. Her defeat at Jaden's hands frees her from this brainwashing and returns her to her true self.

In the third season, Asuka accompanies the group on a mission to another dimension, where she is captured and sacrificed to create a powerful magic card. She is later freed when Jaden merges with the season's antagonist, Yubel. During the final year, she grapples with Jaden's darker, more distant personality and ultimately decides to pursue a future as a duel teacher, though she briefly falls prey to the World of Darkness before being rescued once more.

Asuka shares key relationships with several characters. Her most important bond is with her brother, Atticus, whose disappearance and recovery are central to her personal journey. She develops a deep, trusting friendship with Jaden Yuki, whose unique dueling style and unwavering spirit she comes to admire and rely upon. She is also a close friend of Zane Truesdale, another top Obelisk Blue student and a friend of her brother, and later becomes a friend and occasional rival to Chazz Princeton, who harbors a one-sided crush on her.

As a duelist, Asuka is known for her well-balanced tactics and strategic focus. Her primary deck centers on the Cyber Angel archetype, which consists of powerful Fairy-type Ritual Monsters named after figures from Japanese mythology, such as Cyber Angel Benten and Cyber Angel Dakini. Before adopting the Cyber Angel strategy, she used a Cyber Girl deck featuring Warrior monsters like Cyber Blader and Cyber Prima. When brainwashed by the Society of Light, she temporarily used a White Night deck that focused on negating an opponent's Spell and Trap Cards. Her signature cards and her composure under pressure make her one of the most formidable female duelists in the series.
