TV-Series
Description
Daichi Misawa, known as Bastion Misawa in the English version, is a first-year student at Duel Academy who resides in the Ra Yellow dormitory. He achieved the highest score in the entrance examinations and is widely recognized as the most talented newcomer, a status that immediately establishes his reputation among the student body. His initial meeting with Jaden Yuki occurs during these exams, where Jaden playfully refers to himself as number one and to Misawa as number two, a dynamic that Misawa ultimately accepts after witnessing Jaden’s unexpected victory over a professor.
Misawa’s defining characteristic is his profound analytical nature, believing that every aspect of life, including dueling, can be calculated and understood through mathematical formulas and scientific principles. His room is covered in endless numeric equations, and he famously applies these calculations to his cards and strategies. This logical approach is physically represented by the special vest he wears under his jacket, which holds six distinct decks, each dedicated to a different elemental attribute: Fire, Earth, Wind, Water, Light, and Dark. He chooses which deck to use based on a calculated assessment of his opponent, showcasing his belief in a systematic and prepared approach to every duel.
Despite his analytical mindset, Misawa is driven by a personal code of honor regarding his status as a duelist. After publicly defeating Chazz Princeton, he is offered a promotion to the elite Obelisk Blue dormitory. However, he declines this offer, having made a promise to himself that he would only advance when he becomes the number one duelist of his class. In order to achieve this, he determines he must defeat Jaden Yuki, whom he acknowledges as the current number one. This rivalry is central to his early character, as he dedicates significant effort to studying Jaden's fusion-centric strategies. He even constructs a seventh custom deck, designed specifically to counter Jaden’s tactics by sealing the use of Polymerization, a key spell card for Jaden’s fusion summons. Although this carefully planned strategy brings him close to victory, he is ultimately defeated, a result that highlights the limitation of pure calculation against Jaden’s more intuitive and adaptive dueling style.
Misawa’s role in the story evolves throughout the series. He is selected as one of the seven key keepers who possess a Spirit Key necessary to seal the Sacred Beast cards, a testament to his recognized skill. During the conflict with the Shadow Riders, he duels Tania, a powerful duelist and Amazon warrior. Despite his strategic use of a Magnet Warrior deck that manipulates opposing charges, he loses the duel. The consequences of this loss are unique; rather than simply being defeated, his free will is partially stripped, and he becomes unnaturally infatuated with Tania. He only returns to normal after Jaden defeats her, an experience that begins to undermine his purely logical worldview.
In his second year, Misawa experiences a significant shift in character, driven by a growing sense of neglect and an inferiority complex. Angered that he was not approached to join the Society of Light, a dueling cult led by Sartorius, he challenges the organization to prove his strength. However, his deep-seated desire for recognition is exploited. During a duel with Chazz, who is dueling on Sartorius’s behalf, Misawa has the means to win but is psychologically manipulated into intentionally losing and joining the Society of Light. His time in the Society is marked by a cruel irony; despite joining to gain prominence, he is consistently ignored and given no meaningful tasks. His attempts to gain attention, such as bleaching his hair white, go unnoticed. This period of neglect leads to his eventual enlightenment, where he comes to value his own identity as a duelist. In a unique turn, he rejects the Society’s influence and leaves of his own accord, the only character shown to do so without being defeated in a duel first.
Throughout the series, Misawa demonstrates notable dueling abilities grounded in real-world chemistry and physics. His Water deck focuses on the chemical bonding of hydrogen and oxygen to summon the powerful Water Dragon, while his Earth deck uses the principles of magnetism, featuring monsters with positive and negative charges that can manipulate the battlefield. He also harbors an unexpected, and to himself illogical, soft spot for several female monster cards, such as White Magician Pikeru, which contradicts his strictly rational self-image. His key relationships include his friendly rivalry with Jaden Yuki, his respectful but competitive dynamic with Chazz Princeton, and his complex connection to Tania, with whom he eventually chooses to stay in an alternate dimension, finding a personal happiness outside of the academic hierarchy he once valued so highly.
