Description
Dr. Vellian Crowler, known in the original Japanese version as Cronos de Medici, is a central character in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. His name is derived from Chronos, the personification of time in Greek mythology, and the Medici family, a noble Italian dynasty from the Renaissance period. At the time of his debut, Crowler is 35 years old. He holds the position of head professor of the Obelisk Blue dormitory at Duel Academy and claims to have a Ph.D. in dueling.
Crowler is a man of flamboyant and distinctive appearance. His usual attire is an ornate variation of the Obelisk Blue uniform, complete with gold trimmings and a ruffled pink collar. He has blonde hair sectioned into layers, with the back portion tightly bound in a ponytail, and wears crescent-shaped earrings. He duels using a special Academy-issued Duel Vest worn horizontally across his torso, which features a motion sensor that automatically ejects cards from his deck when he is ready to draw. His androgynous appearance and mannerisms lead several characters to mistake him for a woman, a misunderstanding that visibly frustrates him and prompts him to demand the honorific Doctor. He harbors a notable distaste for the cat Pharaoh, who belongs to Professor Lyman Banner, fearing he might catch rabies from the animal.
In terms of personality, Crowler begins the series as a primary antagonist, defined by his elitism and scheming nature. He firmly believes that only the most talented duelists deserve to attend Duel Academy and that the students of the low-ranking Slifer Red dormitory are a stain on the school's reputation. His main motivation in the first year is to force low-performing students out of the institution. After being unexpectedly defeated by the new Slifer Red student Jaden Yuki during the entrance exams, Crowler becomes obsessed with expelling him. His schemes to achieve this include providing unbeatable card combos to Chazz Princeton, hiring a shadow duelist named Titan to frighten Jaden, and planting a fake love letter to get Jaden in trouble.
Crowler's role in the story evolves significantly. Despite his initial role as an antagonist, he is later chosen as one of the seven guardians of the Spirit Keys, tasked with preventing the resurrection of the Sacred Beasts. He duels the Shadow Rider Camula but is defeated and transformed into a doll, later being restored when Jaden defeats her. During the second year, while Chancellor Sheppard is away, Crowler becomes the acting head of Duel Academy alongside Vice-Chancellor Jean-Louis Bonaparte. The two frequently devise ridiculous schemes to market the school, but Crowler often finds himself defending the Slifer Red dorm from Bonaparte's more aggressive attacks. Their partnership culminates in a triangle duel against Maximillion Pegasus, which they lose.
Throughout the series, Crowler develops a grudging respect for Jaden and his friends. This is first seen when he allows Chumley Huffington to pursue a career as a card designer despite losing their duel, acknowledging the student's vast improvement. By the third year, he has softened considerably, even commenting that Jaden usually saves them when things go wrong. In the final season, as graduation approaches, Crowler briefly reverts to a bitter personality, harshly drilling his students to prevent them from earning enough credits to leave. Jaden duels him to uncover the truth, and Crowler tearfully confesses that he does not want any of his students to go. After his defeat, he returns to his usual self and bids a tearful, emotional farewell to the graduating class.
Crowler specializes in an Ancient Gear deck, a Machine-type archetype themed around dark, medieval machinery. The central monster of his strategy is the imposing Ancient Gear Golem. The primary effect of most Ancient Gear monsters prevents the opponent from activating Spell or Trap cards until the end of the Damage Step when they attack, allowing Crowler to overpower defenses with impunity. His ace monster is also a key component in summoning his most powerful creature, Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem, a formidable fusion monster with even greater piercing damage capabilities.
