Description
Brian Marafuji is the name used for the character Zane Truesdale in the Filipino version of the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Known in the original Japanese version as Ryo Marufuji, Brian is a standout student at the Duel Academy who resides in the most prestigious dormitory, the Obelisk Blue. As an upperclassman, he is widely recognized as the top duelist in the school, a position that commands respect from his peers and underclassmen alike. He is the older brother of Syrus Truesdale, and their relationship is a significant part of his character.
Personality-wise, Brian is generally calm, confident, and collected, though his demeanor can come across as cold or distant, especially towards his younger brother. Despite his seemingly detached attitude, he does care for Syrus, but expresses this concern in a stern and harsh manner rather than showing overt affection. A flashback reveals that when they were younger, Brian harshly stopped Syrus from playing a card that would have led to an immediate loss, demonstrating that his cold behavior is rooted in a desire to teach and protect. This outwardly uncaring treatment of Syrus serves as a major motivation for the protagonist, Jaden Yuki, who challenges Brian to a duel after becoming friends with Syrus.
Throughout the series, Brian plays a crucial role as a powerful rival and a benchmark of strength. He is one of the few characters who manages to defeat Jaden in a duel, solidifying his reputation as an elite duelist. His skills lead to him being chosen as one of the guardians of the Spirit Keys, entrusted with defending the world from the Shadow Riders. However, his journey is marked by significant trials. In a duel against the vampire Camula, he is forced to lose on purpose when she takes Syrus hostage, demonstrating that his care for his brother ultimately outweighs his competitive drive. This defeat leads to him being transformed into a doll as part of Camula's scheme.
Brian's character undergoes a dramatic and dark development following a loss in the Pro League against Aster Phoenix. This defeat shatters his confidence and drives him to participate in brutal underground duels where participants wear shock collars that activate whenever they lose Life Points. He emerges from this experience not only victorious but radically changed, abandoning his original deck to wield the dark and dangerous Cyber Dark deck. This new deck and mindset make him more aggressive and ruthless, and he is described as being consumed by darkness. This new power allows him to defeat his friend Atticus, who had been possessed by Nightshroud. However, the Cyber Dark deck takes a severe physical toll on his body, ultimately causing him to suffer a heart attack. It is later explained that the shocks from his underground duels did not cause his condition, but rather the strain of using the Cyber Dark deck itself.
Key relationships define his path. His bond with Syrus is central, as his younger brother looks up to him and eventually inherits his deck. His rivalry with Jaden Yuki is a driving force for both characters, as their duels push each other to new heights. Near the end of the series, his health deteriorates to the point where he can no longer duel without risking his life, leading to a moment of reconciliation where he passes his Cyber Dark deck to Syrus, who proves capable of using it effectively by combining it with his own deck of machine-type monsters. In his final appearances, Brian regains some of his former calm and thoughtful personality, having moved past the all-consuming darkness that once defined him.
Brian is noted for his exceptional dueling abilities. He initially uses a powerful Cyber Dragon deck, focused on summoning fusion monsters like Cyber End Dragon and Cyber Twin Dragon. After his time in the underground duels, he switches to the Cyber Dark deck, which utilizes monsters like Cyber Dark Horn, Edge, and Keel to equip and power up with Dragon-type monsters from the Graveyard, culminating in the summoning of Cyber Dark Dragon. His signature card from his original deck remains the Cyber Dragon, a mechanical counterpart to the legendary Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and he is considered one of the strongest duelists in the series, with his few losses usually resulting from deliberate choices or external circumstances rather than a lack of skill.
