Description
Judei Yuki, known in the Japanese version as Judai Yuki, is a fifteen-year-old student who enrolls at the prestigious Duel Academy. Despite his exceptional talent in Duel Monsters, he receives a low score on the academy's written entrance exam and is subsequently placed in the lowest-ranked dormitory, Slifer Red. Before arriving at the academy, he receives the card Winged Kuriboh from the legendary duelist Yugi Muto, a spirit partner who remains by his side throughout his journey.

As a character, Judei is initially defined by an enthusiastic, fun-loving, and carefree personality. He possesses an unwavering passion for dueling, approaching each match with a sense of joy rather than a calculated drive for victory. His catchphrase reflects his eagerness to begin a duel. Despite his cheerful exterior, he is headstrong and possesses strong instincts in battle, often relying on his intuition rather than complex mathematical strategies. Throughout his time at the academy, his primary motivation is to enjoy dueling and grow stronger as a duelist, ultimately aspiring to be as great as his mentor, Koyo Hibiki, in the manga continuity.

In the story, Judei serves as the protagonist who consistently confronts the various threats that arise at Duel Academy. During his first year, he defeats most of the Shadow Riders, a group of duelists seeking to release powerful sealed cards, including their leader Kagemaru. He is offered a promotion to the higher-ranked Ra Yellow dorm but declines to remain with his friends in Slifer Red. In his second year, he becomes embroiled in a cosmic conflict between light and darkness, dueling against the Society of Light and its leader, Sartorius. To gain the power necessary for this fight, he ventures into Neo Space and forms a bond with the Elemental Hero Neos and the Neo-Spacians, adopting the role of a universal defender who wields the darkness of justice.

His key relationships heavily influence his growth. He forms close friendships with his roommates Syrus Truesdale and Chumley Huffington, as well as with other students like Alexis Rhodes, who harbors feelings for him, and later Jesse Anderson. He has a rivalry with Chazz Princeton and a mentor-student dynamic with Zane Truesdale. However, his most defining relationship is with Yubel, a duel monster spirit that was his favorite card from childhood. It is revealed that Judei is the reincarnation of a prince known as the Supreme King, and Yubel was transformed into a card to protect him, becoming obsessed with him in the process.

Judei undergoes a significant and dark character development, particularly during the third year. While searching for his lost friend Jesse, he is transported to another dimension where he loses his friends one by one in a series of brutal duels. The trauma and anger from these losses cause him to be possessed by his past self, the Supreme King. Under this influence, he commits terrible atrocities, including defeating and absorbing the souls of many duelists. After being freed from this possession by his friend Axel Brodie, Judei is deeply tormented by guilt and briefly refuses to use his Fusion Monsters. He eventually confronts Yubel, who has possessed Jesse, and learns the truth of their shared past. In the final battle, he chooses to fuse his own soul with Yubel's, purging the dark spirit of its corruption and absorbing its power. This experience leaves him with a more serious and distant demeanor, and his eyes occasionally reflect Yubel's dual-colored scheme.

Judei possesses several notable abilities. Primarily, he is an instinctively brilliant duelist with a remarkable, almost supernatural, luck that allows him to draw the exact card he needs at a critical moment, a skill often referred to as the heart of the cards. He is one of the few characters who can see and communicate with Duel Monster Spirits, with Winged Kuriboh being his constant companion. After his fusion with Yubel, he gains access to its powers for protection and is able to manipulate darkness and spirits. In the manga, his skill is so great that he defeats a cheating teacher who disabled spell cards and later designs his own deck of Masked HERO cards after moving beyond his mentor's Elemental HERO deck.
