Description
Maximillian Pegasus is the president of Industrial Illusions and the inventor of the Duel Monsters card game. He originally aspired to be an artist, and the artwork for the game’s monsters was largely his own creation. His left eye has been replaced with the Millennium Eye, an ancient Egyptian artifact that grants him the power to read minds, see into a person’s soul, and even seal souls inside cards. Pegasus modeled Duel Monsters after the Shadow Games of ancient Egypt, which he became obsessed with after a personal tragedy.

Pegasus is depicted as sophisticated, cultured, and outwardly a perfect gentleman, but he harbors many dark secrets. He is dramatic and flamboyant, with a foppish manner and a tendency to address others with nicknames such as “Yugi-boy” and “Kaiba-boy.” His behavior can shift between that of a ruthless businessman and a whimsical cartoon enthusiast; he grew up watching cartoons, which inspired his Toon Monster cards. Despite his duplicitous nature, he holds a strong personal code of honor, considering himself a man of his word and showing humility after defeat.

His primary motivation stems from the loss of his beloved Cecelia. The two met when he was young, fell in love, and planned to marry, but Cecelia died of illness at the age of seventeen. Devastated, Pegasus traveled the world searching for a means to revive her. In Egypt he encountered Shadi, a guardian of the Millennium Items, who forcibly embedded the Millennium Eye into his socket. Through the Eye, Pegasus briefly saw Cecelia’s spirit, reinforcing his determination. He later sought control of KaibaCorp’s Solid Vision technology, believing it could be combined with the Millennium Items to resurrect Cecelia. This ambition drove him to orchestrate the Duelist Kingdom tournament, strike a deal with the Big Five to take over KaibaCorp, and challenge Yugi Muto.

In the narrative, Pegasus serves as the primary antagonist of the Duelist Kingdom arc. He lures Yugi into a Shadow Game, steals the soul of Yugi’s grandfather Solomon to force his participation, and later defeats and imprisons Seto Kaiba and his brother Mokuba. He uses the Millennium Eye to read his opponents’ minds, gaining an unfair advantage in duels. His Toon-centric deck revolves around the field spell Toon World, which allows his monsters to attack directly. Despite his cheating, he disapproves of others cheating for selfish reasons, as shown when he exposes Bandit Keith. Pegasus ultimately loses to Yami Yugi, who exploits a lag in the Eye’s mind-reading ability by switching between his two personas. After the duel, Pegasus honors his promise, freeing the captured souls and awarding prize money to help Joey Wheeler’s sister. Shortly afterward, a weakened Pegasus is ambushed by Yami Bakura, who steals the Millennium Eye and leaves him comatose.

Following his defeat, Pegasus undergoes a significant development. He later reappears as a reformed ally, having abandoned his ruthless facade. In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, he is more laid-back and jovial, even intervening to mediate conflicts between duelists. His artistic talent remains a constant: he designed the God Cards based on ancient Egyptian carvings, and his love for Cecelia continued to influence his actions, with some of his cards bearing her name.

Key relationships include his rivalry with Seto Kaiba and his adversarial yet respectful connection to Yugi Muto. He formed a brief alliance with the Big Five but ultimately manipulated them for his own ends. Shadi served as the unwitting catalyst for his powers, while Cecelia remained his emotional anchor throughout the series.

Notable abilities beyond the Millennium Eye include his skill as a duelist, his creative genius in inventing and balancing the Duel Monsters game, and his proficiency in painting and card design. His deck specializes in Toon Monsters and the Ritual monster Relinquished, along with fusion strategies using Thousand-Eyes Restrict. Even after losing the Millennium Eye, his knowledge of the game and his strategic cunning remain formidable.
