Description
The character known as Thief King Bakura, also referred to as Bandit King Bakura, is the ancient Egyptian incarnation of the modern-day Ryo Bakura and serves as a central figure in the final story arc of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series. This character is a distinct entity from the malevolent spirit Yami Bakura, though their histories are profoundly intertwined; the Thief King is the original soul whose experiences and hatred form the foundation for the later spirit's actions.

The background of the Thief King is rooted in tragedy. As a child, he was the sole survivor of the village of Kul Elna, whose inhabitants, including his family and friends, were massacred to provide the sacrificial components necessary for the forging of the seven Millennium Items. This atrocity was ordered by the pharaoh's inner circle, leading the young survivor to believe that Pharaoh Akhenamkhanen, the father of Pharaoh Atem, was directly responsible. This horrific event forged his entire identity, filling him with an undying hatred for the royal family of Egypt and a burning desire for revenge. His intense rage and the lingering spirits of his village manifested as an extraordinarily powerful Ka, a spiritual monster named Diabound, which became his primary weapon.

In terms of personality, the Thief King is driven, ruthless, and profoundly bitter. His tragic past has left him with a cold and sadistic demeanor, showing little regard for the lives of those who stand between him and his goal of obtaining all the Millennium Items. He is, however, not without depth. His anger is presented as having a logical foundation; he challenges the pharaoh's claim to righteousness, pointing out that the very creation of the mystical items was an act of evil that directly destroyed his home. This conviction makes him a formidable antagonist, as he genuinely believes he is waging a just war against a tyrant.

The primary motivation of the Thief King is to avenge his people by dismantling the pharaoh's kingdom and resurrecting the great evil god, Zorc Necrophades. He seeks to obtain all seven Millennium Items, believing that by placing them back into the Millennium Stone at Kul Elna, he can summon Zorc and use its power to exact his final revenge. He is used as a pawn in this grand design, acting as the instrument through which the dark deity can be brought back into the world.

Within the story, the Thief King is the main antagonist of the Pharaoh's Memories arc. He directly confronts Pharaoh Atem and his six guardians, the high priests. His role is to attack the palace, steal the Millennium Items, and ultimately provide the means for Zorc's resurrection. Key relationships define his path. His central conflict is with Pharaoh Atem, the son of the man he believes ordered the massacre of his village. He also has a significant rivalry with the high priest Mahado, from whom he steals the Millennium Ring, an act that leads to Mahado's sacrifice and transformation into the Dark Magician. While he is a separate person from Yami Bakura, his body and actions are manipulated by this future spirit who enters the memory world to ensure history unfolds in a specific way.

The character's development is largely a tragic one. He begins as an innocent child who, through immense suffering, becomes a vessel for vengeance. Throughout the arc, he achieves several victories, including defeating the Egyptian God Slifer the Sky Dragon and seizing the Millennium Puzzle, but he is ultimately a tool. After his Ka, Diabound, is destroyed by the mightiest god, The Winged Dragon of Ra, he is cast aside by Yami Bakura, who declares that he has "outlived his usefulness" before turning him to dust. In some depictions, he is briefly revived to serve as a distraction before willingly sacrificing himself to grant Zorc a physical form, completing the very purpose his cursed existence was meant to serve.

The Thief King possesses several notable abilities. His most prominent is the command over his Ka, Diabound. This monster is unique in its ability to evolve and absorb the abilities of any monster it defeats in battle, growing progressively stronger as the story unfolds. It can gain abilities such as vanishing into shadows, launching powerful energy attacks, and even replicating the powers of Egyptian Gods. As a skilled thief and combatant, he is also proficient in using the Millennium Ring, which grants him the power to evade capture, detect other items, and manipulate shadows. His physical appearance, with a muscular build, tanned skin, long white hair, and a distinctive double scar under his eye, reflects his fierce and wild nature as a king of thieves living outside the law of the pharaoh.
