Description
Priest Seto is a character from the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime who lived in ancient Egypt three thousand years before the main events of the series. He was one of the six Sacred Guardians, also known as High Priests, who served the Pharaoh, and he was the wielder of the Millennium Rod. Seto was the son of Priest Akhenaden and the first cousin of the Pharaoh he served, Atem, and he is presented in the story as the past life of the modern duelist Seto Kaiba. He is named after the Egyptian god Set.
Seto's background is tied closely to his family history. His father, Akhenaden, left his family and royal status behind to serve the kingdom, and Seto was raised by his mother, who told him that his father had died in battle. Not knowing he was related to the royal family, Seto joined the priesthood as a child, and it was there that he unknowingly met Akhenaden again. Akhenaden, who had become a priest and had secretly orchestrated the massacre at Kul Elna to forge the Millennium Items, took an interest in Seto's upbringing within the priesthood and taught him about morality, philosophy, the law of Ma'at, and the concept of order. Akhenaden had also used the Millennium Eye to make a wish for his son to one day become Pharaoh. Through his own efforts, Seto rose to become one of the youngest Sacred Guardians, and he served as a priest alongside his cousin Atem.
In personality, Seto was confident and highly capable. Although he was young compared with the other guardians, he displayed extraordinary ability that made up for his lack of experience, and his overt confidence sometimes led him to look down on his fellow priests, even though no one could question his skill. He was devoted to protecting the kingdom and was willing to do whatever was necessary to achieve that, even if his methods were not always humane. Unlike his modern reincarnation Seto Kaiba, Priest Seto was more open-minded and willing to cooperate with others. He also shared a strong friendship and rivalry with Atem; the two helped each other grow by testing their abilities against one another, and their earliest relationship was that of a prince and a priest in training.
Seto's motivations centered on duty to the kingdom and a desire to prove himself, but he also became vulnerable to darker influences through his father. Akhenaden grew envious of Atem and came to believe that Seto was more worthy of the throne. After his death, Akhenaden's vengeful spirit entered Seto's heart and manipulated him into challenging the Pharaoh. In the anime, this took the form of Seto appearing to turn against Atem and seek power for himself, and during the memory sequences connected to the Battle City story, he declared that he was not on anyone's side and simply wished to defeat the Pharaoh, echoing the rivalry between Kaiba and Yugi in the present day. The priestess Ishizu described Seto as someone who strengthened Atem through their battles and was both his friend and his rival.
A central part of Seto's story is his relationship with a young woman named Kisara. Kisara was a foreigner with fair skin and long light hair who was persecuted by villagers because of her unusual appearance, and Seto saved her. She carried within her the spirit of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, a monster with power rivaling the Egyptian gods, and that spirit protected her and later protected Seto as well. Akhenaden killed Kisara so that Seto could gain the power of the dragon and use it against the Pharaoh, an event that left a deep emotional mark on Seto. The feelings Seto had for Kisara are presented in the story as the basis for Seto Kaiba's intense attachment to the Blue-Eyes White Dragon in the modern era. In the final part of the ancient storyline, when Akhenaden's vengeful spirit was controlling Seto, the light of Kisara appeared within Seto's heart and destroyed the spirit, freeing him from his father's manipulation. In the anime, Akhenaden had been killed by Seto himself before his spirit took hold of him.
