Description
Dartz is the primary antagonist of a major story arc in the second series anime, a character whose origins are deeply intertwined with the legendary lost continent of Atlantis. His history begins ten thousand years in the past, where he lived as the king of a prosperous and idealistic Atlantis. This golden age came to an end with the arrival of meteors carrying a mysterious, powerful substance known as the Orichalcos, which bestowed great knowledge and power upon the Atlanteans but also sowed the seeds of corruption and greed. After witnessing his wife transformed into a monstrous beast by the Orichalcos's influence, a confused and frightened Dartz sought guidance from the stones. The Orichalcos granted him immense power but ultimately corrupted him, driving him to serve its will and resurrect an ancient, destructive entity known as the Great Leviathan. This led to a great war in Atlantis, where his own father, Ironheart, and his daughter, Chris, allied with powerful creatures, including the three Legendary Dragons, to stop him. The battle ended in a stalemate, with the Great Leviathan sealed away and the island of Atlantis sinking into the ocean.

The tragedy of Atlantis warped Dartz’s personality and motivations into a fanatical, centuries-long mission. He became convinced that humanity possessed an inherent, inescapable wickedness and that the world was a fundamentally evil place. His goal was to purge the existing world and create a new, pure one in the image of what Atlantis once was. To achieve this, he needed to revive the Great Leviathan, which required an immense number of human souls. Kept alive by the Orichalcos's power, Dartz spent the next ten thousand years collecting these souls. He observed key historical moments, such as witnessing the Pharaoh Atem in ancient Egypt, identifying his powerful soul as a crucial component for his plan but being unable to claim it at the time. To efficiently gather souls across the globe, Dartz established a powerful multinational conglomerate named Paradius and a secretive organization dedicated to using the Seal of Orichalcos card to trap the souls of Duel Monsters players.

In the present-day narrative, Dartz manipulates events from the shadows, pulling the strings of his elite subordinates, known as the Three Swordsmen. He systematically destroyed the lives of these followers—Rafael, Valon, and Alister—by orchestrating tragedies and framing them for crimes, deliberately filling them with hatred and molding them into loyal servants for his cause. Leading this organization, Dartz presents a calm, composed, and often faux-affable demeanor, but this masks a ruthless and calculating nature. He shows little genuine care for his subordinates, viewing them simply as tools. Throughout the story, he demonstrates powerful magical abilities rivaling those of the Millennium Items, such as summoning the Orichalcos Soldiers, telepathy, remote viewing, creating storms, brainwashing others, and using telekinesis.

Dartz’s central role in the story culminates in a climactic duel against both Yami Yugi and Seto Kaiba. In this duel, he showcases a specialized deck built around the Seal of Orichalcos and its more powerful forms. His strategy often involves using the Mirror Knight Calling card to generate tokens that mirror the attack power of his opponent's monsters. More defensively, he uses Orichalcos Kyutora to absorb all battle damage, which then powers up his ultimate monster, Orichalcos Shunoros. Despite losing the duel, Dartz remains fanatical, sacrificing his own soul to fully resurrect the Great Leviathan, merging his consciousness with the beast and raising a revived Atlantis from the sea. His development concludes in a final metaphysical battle where Yami Yugi, by unlocking the power of the Legendary Dragons and the spirits trapped inside the Leviathan, manages to destroy the beast. In doing so, Yami Yugi also frees Dartz's soul from the Orichalcos's malevolent influence. At the end, a redeemed Dartz is finally reunited with the spirits of his father and daughter as Atlantis sinks back beneath the waves for good.
