TV-Series
Description
Dave Quagmire, also known by his Aliea Academy alias Dvalin, is a character whose original name is Saginuma Osamu. He first appears as a formidable opponent during the second major story arc, serving as the captain of the elite Aliea Academy team, Epsilon, and its later evolution, Epsilon Plus. Like many of the players in the Aliea organization, he was originally from the Ohisama En orphanage and was subjected to the energy of the Aliea meteorite as part of a project to create superhuman football players. His role in the series expands beyond his initial villainous persona, as he later becomes the captain of the self-formed team Neo Japan and continues to appear in subsequent storylines, including as an assistant coach in Inazuma Eleven GO.

Visually, Dave Quagmire is recognized by his dark blue, almost black, hair that is styled into two long ponytails framing his face, paired with striking orange eyes. Under the identity of Dvalin, his appearance is often more intense, and in his Epsilon Plus form, his eyes notably change to a glowing red. In later appearances as an adult in Inazuma Eleven GO, his attire shifts to a more casual coaching look, including a navy shirt, purple trousers, and a red jacket with gold trim.

His personality is defined by a powerful determination and a dark, ambitious nature that surfaces during his time with Aliea Academy. As Dvalin, he projects an intimidating and merciless aura, viewing weakness as intolerable. However, beneath this exterior lies a genuine love for football, and he becomes deeply inspired by displays of willpower and perseverance, particularly those shown by the protagonist, Mark Evans. This admiration reveals a crucial aspect of his character: he craves strong opponents who can push him to his limits. When things do not go exactly as he has meticulously planned, he has a tendency to become visibly frustrated and lose his composure. Despite this, he is fundamentally a responsible individual, a capable leader, and someone who can gracefully admit defeat while being driven to improve, showcasing a maturity that develops over time.

His primary motivation shifts as the series progresses. Initially, as a tool of the Aliea project, he is consumed by a desire for power and following the orders to destroy other schools' football clubs. However, his intense matches against Raimon ignite a more personal and pure ambition: to test his strength and experience the thrill of true competition. After the Aliea incident, his drive becomes rooted in a desire to represent Japan on the international stage. Frustrated and hurt by not being selected for the official national team, Inazuma Japan, he channels his determination into creating the rival team, Neo Japan, to prove his worth and forcibly claim a spot in the Football Frontier International tournament.

In the story, his most significant role is that of a major antagonist in the Aliea Academy saga. As the captain of Epsilon, he is the first truly overwhelming threat after the initial alien teams, meant to showcase the immense power gap the protagonists must overcome. In a notable early match against Raimon, after easily dominating, he demonstrates a sense of honor or perhaps calculated arrogance by giving the team ten days to train and become stronger, showing his desire for a more satisfying contest. The final match against his upgraded Epsilon Plus team is a turning point, where he reveals his true position as a powerful striker in addition to his goalkeeping role, using his new hissatsu technique, Gungnir, to score against Raimon for the first time. His subsequent role shifts from antagonist to rival. As captain of Neo Japan, he challenges Inazuma Japan directly, not out of malice, but out of a burning desire to prove his team's strength and earn the right to compete on the world stage.

His key relationship is with Mark Evans, whose unwavering spirit and incredible growth directly challenge and change Dvalin's worldview. Mark's determination is what initially captivates him, transforming a desire to crush a weak opponent into a respect for a worthy rival. After their final match as enemies, they share a handshake, signifying the end of their antagonism and the beginning of a mutual respect, with Dave even sending a letter of support to Inazuma Japan later on. He also shares a deep bond with his former Aliea teammates, particularly the ones who play alongside him on Neo Japan, such as Neil and Lina. His relationship with Lina, his coach on Neo Japan, shows a dynamic where he is a dedicated and hardworking player under her guidance, continuing to train with her even after their team's defeat.

Dave Quagmire undergoes a significant character development arc. He starts as a cold, power-hungry agent of a sinister project, defined by his alien persona, Dvalin. His encounters with Raimon, and Mark Evans specifically, reawaken his genuine love for football, which had been suppressed by the Aliea meteorite's influence. He transitions from a villain who wants to dominate to a rival who wants to prove his merit. The creation of Neo Japan is a direct result of this growth, showcasing his initiative and leadership. By the events of Inazuma Eleven GO, his development culminates in him taking on a supportive role as a coach, guiding younger players rather than fighting for his own glory, showing a mature and responsible evolution from his days as a rebellious and ambitious captain.

In terms of notable abilities, Dave Quagmire is one of the most versatile players in the series, having demonstrated proficiency as a goalkeeper, forward, and midfielder. His playing style is heavily reliant on powerful special techniques known as hissatsu. As a goalkeeper, his signature moves include Wormhole, which creates a portal to absorb and redirect shots, and its more powerful evolution, Drill Smasher. On offense, his most famous technique is Gungnir, a devastating shooting move where he kicks the ball through a portal, transforming it into a celestial spear-like projectile. He also utilizes several other techniques, including the shooting move God Knows Kai, the dribbling move Illusion Ball, and defensive moves like Quick Draw and Gravitation. His skill set, combined with his tactical mind and leadership as a captain, makes him a formidable all-around player who can adapt to various positions on the field to challenge his opponents.
