TV-Series
Description
Jousuke Tsunami is a supporting character first introduced as a defender for Oumihara Middle School before joining Raimon and later being selected for the Japanese national team, Inazuma Japan. Hailing from Okinawa, his life before soccer was defined entirely by the sea, where he was a dedicated and skilled surfer. His birth date is not revealed within the series. He is notably the oldest player on both the Raimon and Inazuma Japan teams at fifteen years old, a fact that surprises his teammates when they first learn it.
Tsunami is characterized by an energetic, optimistic, and remarkably laid-back personality. He embodies the role of a "big brother" figure, being supportive and reliable, yet he is completely unbothered by his younger teammates treating him as an equal rather than a senior. His entire worldview is filtered through his love for the ocean, and he frequently explains concepts or offers encouragement by drawing comparisons to the sea and the nature of waves. He approaches challenges with a lighthearted attitude; for instance, upon first trying soccer, he confidently proclaims it appears much simpler than surfing. Despite his cheerful and sometimes carefree demeanor, he demonstrates fierce determination during matches and possesses an uncanny athletic sense. A minor personal trait is his dislike for carrots.
Tsunami's primary motivation stems from pure enjoyment and a newfound passion for soccer, which he discovers almost by accident. The Raimon team first encounters him after one of their members falls overboard near a small island, and Tsunami dives in to rescue him. Intrigued by the soccer practice he witnesses on the beach, he joins in a casual match. Despite having no prior experience, his natural athleticism and power allow him to score an impressive goal using a technique he created on the spot, which he names Tsunami Boost. This experience sparks his interest, leading him to join Oumihara's soccer club and eventually accept a spot on Raimon's team to help them in their battles against the alien Aliea Academy.
His role in the story begins as a powerful new asset for Raimon, bringing raw physical strength and an unpredictable, unorthodox style of play to the defender position. He quickly adapts his surfing skills to the soccer field, using his exceptional balance, spatial awareness, and kicking power. Within Inazuma Japan, he continues as a key defender, often using his unique abilities to break through opposing defenses. During the Football Frontier International tournament, he forms a specific rivalry with the captain of the Australian team, Big Waves, who also claims to be the world's greatest surfer. This rivalry pushes Tsunami to develop a new, powerful technique to surpass his opponent.
Tsunami forms several significant bonds within the team. He shares a particularly close friendship with the goalkeeper, Yuuki Tachimukai, dedicating time to help him train and develop his techniques. He also develops a cooperative relationship with defender Heigorou Kabeyama, encouraging him during a difficult match. To the younger members of Raimon, he is a cool, admired figure, but he never acts superior, treating everyone with an easy-going familiarity. In later years, he is shown to know and encourage the young Matsukaze Tenma before he becomes Raimon's captain, with Tenma affectionately calling him Tsunami-nii-nii.
Tsunami undergoes a notable development, evolving from a complete novice with no understanding of soccer's rules to a national team player in a remarkably short period. His growth is not about overcoming emotional trauma but about rapidly acquiring new skills and adapting his innate talents to a team sport. He learns to combine his individual power with his teammates, mastering cooperative techniques. His character also gains a humorous humanizing moment when it is revealed that the "man of the ocean" is utterly terrified of flying on an airplane.
Tsunami possesses several notable abilities that are all inspired by the sea. His signature technique, Tsunami Boost, is a powerful long-range shot that he invented during his very first soccer game. He develops The Typhoon, a rotating shot that he uses to overcome the Australian team's reef-like defensive wall. Another technique, The Tube, which he uses for a corner kick, generates a powerful spinning current with the ball. On the defensive side, he is part of the combination technique Perfect Tower, used to block powerful shots. His physical abilities, including his speed, power, and incredible balance honed from surfing, are consistently highlighted as his greatest assets on the field.
