Description
Daichi Kobayashi, often called Dai Dai by those close to him, is a central character who serves as both a foil and a steadfast ally to the protagonist. He is a student at the same school as Himeko Nonohara, where he has a reputation as a known troublemaker and a bit of a rebel. His rebellious spirit is mostly mild, manifesting as a tendency to play pranks, make fun of authority figures like a teacher known as Mr. Gori, and occasionally skip school for trips or race around the hallways on roller skates. Despite this behavior, he is not a delinquent but rather a boy with a strong-willed and independent nature. This mischievous and slightly disruptive personality makes him a notable figure in the school, to the point where he is considered a chick magnet and has an entire fan club dedicated to him, led by a girl named Hikaru Hibino.

Physically, Daichi has a couple of different depictions across the manga and anime. In the original manga, he is illustrated with dirty blond hair, while the anime adaptation gives him dark brown hair. Regardless of the medium, he is generally recognized as a teenager with an appearance suitable for his age and role as a male lead.

His personality is more nuanced than his troublemaking label suggests. Underneath his mischievous exterior, Daichi is a pretty nice guy who is considerate of people's emotions when they are at their worst. He is kind, friendly, and has a protective streak, especially regarding his younger brother and those he considers close friends. He initially begins teasing Himeko because of her tomboyish behavior, but this playful antagonism quickly evolves into a genuine friendship. As the story progresses, he becomes a classic example of a jerk with a heart of gold, someone whose initial prankishness gives way to a deep and selfless care for others. He is also shown to be level-headed and reassuring in moments of crisis, often being the one to ground Himeko when she becomes impulsive or careless with her magic.

Daichi's primary motivation within the story shifts as his relationship with Himeko develops. Initially, he seems motivated by his own amusement and rebellious tendencies. However, after discovering her secret, his actions are largely driven by a desire to protect her and keep her safe. He becomes invested in helping her navigate the complexities of her double life, motivated by loyalty and, eventually, deeper romantic feelings that he is slow to fully acknowledge.

In the narrative, Daichi plays an indispensable role as the first person to discover Himeko's magical secret after a series of incidents. This discovery is a major plot point, as the rules of the magical world dictate that no one should learn about the ribbon's power. Instead of facing punishment or memory erasure, an exception is made for Daichi, allowing him to become Himeko's Secret Keeper. This role makes him her primary confidant and partner in navigating the adventures and misadventures that her magic causes. He often travels with her to the Land of Magic, where he meets his exact counterpart, a boy named Camille. His knowledge of the ribbon creates a strong bond between him and Himeko and puts him at the center of the story, as much of the tension involves him helping her avoid exposing her secret to others like Hikaru Hibino.

His key relationships define his character arc. His most significant relationship is with Himeko Nonohara. What begins as teasing evolves into a deep friendship and, eventually, a mutual romantic attraction. The two frequently deny being a couple, leading to many she is not my girlfriend moments, yet it becomes clear they have strong feelings for each other as time passes. In a critical moment where Himeko is trapped in another person's body and believes she will be stuck forever, Daichi is devastated but remains a source of comfort and strength, reassuring her that she will always be Himeko no matter what. Another important relationship is his dynamic with Hikaru Hibino, the president of his fan club who considers herself his rival for Daichi’s affection. Unlike the eventual love-hate dynamic he has with Himeko, Daichi makes it clear he sees Hibino as nothing more than a friend.

Throughout the story, Daichi experiences notable development. He starts as a solitary troublemaker who kept to himself, but his interactions with Himeko open him up to genuine friendship and responsibility. He evolves from a simple boy who teases Himeko for being a tomboy into her most trusted ally and protector. While he never outright states that he loves her for a long time, his actions and his growing concern for her well-being demonstrate a clear emotional development that culminates in a solid, unspoken mutual understanding between them.

As a human boy with no magical abilities of his own, Daichi does not possess any supernatural powers. His notable abilities are instead grounded in his personality and role. He is observant and resourceful, often helping Himeko think through the limitations and problems caused by her ribbon. His primary strength is his loyalty, courage, and willingness to stand by Himeko despite the risks, which include the potential of having his memory erased if the secret were ever fully exposed to the wider world.
