Description
Archibald Cornwell André, known to nearly everyone as Archie, is a member of the wealthy and influential André family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is the younger brother of Alistair Cornwell André and a cousin of the ill-fated Anthony Brown, as well as Eliza and Neil Legrand. Born on October 11, 1898, Archie is characterized by his meticulous attention to personal appearance, always dressing in the height of fashion and carrying himself with an air of elegance and charm. He has brown-blonde hair and blue eyes.

As a child, Archie was cheerful, mischievous, and often followed the lead of his older brother, Stear. Their parents were frequently traveling, leaving the brothers in the care of their great-aunt Elroy. When their cousin Anthony came to live with them after his mother's death, Archie embraced him as another brother, though he sometimes felt a twinge of jealousy because Anthony, as the eldest and a favorite of Aunt Elroy, could avoid punishment while he and Stear could not. This childhood dynamic helped shape his strong sense of friendship and loyalty that he demonstrates throughout his life.

As a young man, Archie is a confident and passionate flirt, prone to coquetting with any girl he meets, which initially makes him seem shallow and vain. He is known to dislike anything that might dirty his fine clothes, once revealing he is an expert swimmer but refused to enter a lake because it would ruin his silk shirt. Despite his vanity, he possesses a docile, gentlemanly, and kind-hearted nature. He is impulsive, brave, somewhat jealous, and does not enjoy being the butt of jokes, yet he is a fun and devoted friend.

Archie's primary motivation and central role in the story revolve around his unrequited love for the protagonist, Candy White. He first encounters Candy after she accidentally sets his boat adrift near a waterfall, and he is immediately captivated by her, despite her being very different from the delicate, feminine girls he usually preferred. For Candy, this charming and gallant young man makes a strong impression, but her heart is soon stolen by his cousin, Anthony. Demonstrating his honorable and respectful character, Archie chooses not to interfere with their budding romance.

After Anthony's tragic death, Archie's deep feelings for Candy resurface, especially when they find themselves together again. However, he finds himself in a complicated position. His close friend Annie is deeply in love with him, and Candy, wanting to avoid hurting Annie, would never allow herself to reciprocate Archie's affections. At the same time, Archie develops a fierce rivalry with Terrence Grandchester, whom he views as an interloper stealing the girl he believes should be his by right of having known her first. Ultimately, upon realizing the depth of Annie's love, Archie steps aside once more, allowing Candy to pursue her feelings for Terry and beginning a committed relationship with Annie.

Throughout the series, Archie endures significant loss. He mourns Anthony as a brother and suffers the devastating death of his own brother, Stear, whom he was very close to. He overcomes these sorrows with the unwavering support of Annie. Once his relationship with Annie begins, Archie remains faithful and loyal, never again making advances toward Candy, even though it is suggested that Candy remained his first and truest love.

In terms of abilities, Archie has no particular special skills but is known for being the most elegant and perhaps the most level-headed of the André cousins. He is a skilled swimmer, though his vanity often prevents him from demonstrating it. His greatest strengths are his social graces, his loyalty, and his ability to form stable, lasting relationships, as demonstrated by his enduring partnership with Annie.
