Description
Kazuya Uesugi is the younger of the identical twin brothers at the heart of the story. He is the picture of the diligent and responsible son, standing in stark contrast to his older twin, Tatsuya. While Tatsuya is carefree and unmotivated, Kazuya is serious, hard-working, and driven, excelling in all of his endeavors.

From a young age, Kazuya dedicated himself to mastering baseball, a pursuit not born from his own ambition but from a promise to his neighbor and close friend, Minami Asakura. His primary motivation is to fulfill Minami's dream of seeing someone dear to her play at Koshien, the national high school baseball championship. This promise fuels his relentless training and shapes his entire path through middle and high school.

As the ace pitcher for Meisei High School, Kazuya is celebrated as a star athlete and an academic standout, making him incredibly popular with his peers and the favorite of his parents. He is kind, polite, and considerate, particularly of Minami and his brother. Despite his own feelings for Minami, which form a quiet but deep affection, he is perceptive enough to sense that her heart may lie with Tatsuya. This creates a delicate dynamic; he refrains from forcing a confrontation with his brother over their shared love, instead hoping to win her over by achieving the goal she set for them both.

Kazuya plays a pivotal role as the initial driving force of the narrative. His talent and discipline elevate the unknown Meisei High team into a contender for the Koshien tournament. His journey is tragically cut short on the morning of the championship finals, when he dies in a traffic accident while protecting a child from an oncoming truck. This shocking event is the catalyst for the entire story, as it forces his brother Tatsuya to confront his own latent potential and take up the dream Kazuya left unfinished.

Throughout his life, Kazuya undergoes subtle but important personal development. He carries the burden of being the family's hope and is constantly compared to his lazy brother, yet he never looks down on Tatsuya. In fact, he deeply respects the natural talent he sees in his twin that he himself lacks, having had to cultivate his own abilities through sheer effort. On the night before his final game, aware of the unspoken tension between the three, he confesses his intentions to Minami and asks for her answer if he wins, showing his determination to finally resolve the love triangle.

As a pitcher, Kazuya is portrayed as highly skilled, with excellent control and a powerful delivery that makes him a formidable ace capable of leading his team to consecutive victories. His real notable ability, however, lies in his force of will and character. It is his unwavering dedication and kind nature that inspire those around him, most notably his brother, and his absence becomes the very thing that pushes them to achieve the dream he first set in motion. His death is the touch that passes the baton of ambition and love from one twin to the other.
