Description
Kōtarō Matsudaira is a student at Meisei High School and the starting catcher and clean-up hitter for the school's baseball team. He is initially introduced as the best friend of Kazuya Uesugi, the team's ace pitcher, and the two form a close battery during their middle school and early high school years. Kōtarō is physically large and portly, and though he is a slow runner, he compensates with powerful hitting that makes him a reliable offensive force.

His personality is defined by deep loyalty and a strong sense of friendship. He is earnest, emotional, and at times stubborn, especially when his values are challenged. Following Kazuya's sudden death in a traffic accident, Kōtarō is devastated and initially resents Tatsuya Uesugi, Kazuya's twin brother, for joining the baseball team. He sees Tatsuya's entry as an insult to Kazuya's memory and reacts with hostility, refusing to accept him as a teammate. This conflict stems from his profound grief and his need to protect the legacy of his fallen friend.

Over time, however, Kōtarō witnesses Tatsuya's genuine talent and dedication. He gradually warms to Tatsuya and becomes his trusted catcher and close friend, forming a new battery that drives the team forward. His role shifts from a gatekeeper of the past to a pillar of support for Tatsuya's growth. After the senior players graduate, Kōtarō takes on the role of team captain, demonstrating leadership and a commitment to unifying the squad. He also serves as a moral anchor, reminding the team of the standards set by Kazuya while encouraging them to forge their own path.

Kōtarō's key relationships include his deep bond with the Uesugi brothers. With Kazuya, he shared an effortless partnership and mutual respect. With Tatsuya, the relationship evolves from antagonism to a powerful alliance built on earned trust. He also interacts with Minami Asakura, the team manager and childhood friend of the Uesugis, often showing a protective and supportive side. His friendship with the eccentric boxer Harada provides comic relief but also underscores his loyalty to the group.

In terms of development, Kōtarō moves from being defined by loss to embracing new possibilities. His ability to forgive and adapt makes him a crucial stabilizing force. After high school, he helps run his family's liquor store while also serving as a coach for the Meisei baseball team, passing on his experience to the next generation.

His notable abilities center on baseball: strong batting power, reliable catching, and a strategic understanding of the game. Although not the fastest or most naturally gifted, his hard work and emotional intelligence make him an indispensable part of the team. His voice on the field, both as a catcher and as captain, guides his teammates through high-pressure games.
