Description
Ichiyō Tsukishima is the eldest of the four Tsukishima sisters and a central supporting figure in the household around which the story revolves. She is the first daughter of Seiji Tsukishima and his late wife Yōko. Her name combines ichi, meaning one, with yō, meaning leaf.
Ichiyō has a warm and caring personality, possessing what can be described as a motherly aura. This demeanor developed out of necessity, as she took on the role of surrogate mother to her younger sisters Wakaba, Aoba, and Momiji following their mother's death when Ichiyō was still in junior high school. While she is generally gentle and reliable, she has been shown to have a fiery temper, though this aspect of her personality mellowed considerably as she matured. She treats Kō Kitamura, the neighbor boy who grew up alongside her sisters, like a younger brother.
Her primary motivation stems from her sense of responsibility toward her family. She works diligently at the family business, the Clover Cafe, where she serves as both a waitress and cook. Her culinary skills are notably excellent, a trait that stands in contrast to her younger sister Aoba, who cannot cook. By the start of the second part of the story, Ichiyō is in her second year of college.
Ichiyō plays a crucial role in the story as the anchor of the Tsukishima household, providing stability that allows her younger siblings to pursue their passions, particularly baseball. She is the one who runs the batting center alongside her father, creating the environment where Kō and Aoba hone their skills.
One of the most significant relationships in her life develops with Junpei Azuma, the older brother of star player Yūhei Azuma. Junpei courts her persistently, and although she initially acts aloof toward him, the two begin dating and spending considerable time together. Their relationship becomes a pivotal plot point when Ichiyō, in a moment of playful yet meaningful negotiation, tells Junpei she will marry him if the Seishu High School baseball team qualifies for the national tournament at Koshien Stadium. This condition motivates Junpei to become the team's hitting coach, dedicating himself to training the players. Privately, she admits to Kō that she intended to marry Junpei regardless of the team's success, revealing that her condition was more of a challenge than a genuine ultimatum.
Physically, Ichiyō is depicted as a young woman with black hair that falls to her shoulder blades and dark brown eyes. When working at the cafe, she wears a navy blue apron adorned with a green clover symbol.
Her notable abilities lie not on the baseball field but in the domestic and business realms. She is an excellent cook and a capable manager of the family cafe, having effectively run the Tsukishima household since her early teens. Her steady, responsible nature makes her the emotional foundation of the family, allowing the more baseball-obsessed members of the Tsukishima family and the Kitamura household to pursue their dreams with the security that home life is taken care of.
