Description
Nagiko Hojo is a supporting character in the anime Shangri-La. She is the grandmother of Kuniko Hojo and serves as the head of the anti-government organization Metal Age. Stern and reserved, Nagiko places a strong emphasis on learning and traditional knowledge, preferring books over the internet as sources of information. Her personality stands in contrast to her granddaughter’s more energetic and rebellious nature, and she desires Kuniko to become the next leader of Metal Age, though Kuniko has no interest in the position.
Nagiko’s background reveals a hidden and influential past: she was the original founder and first CEO of the Atlas Corporation, the entity responsible for the Atlas Project, a futuristic city built to serve as a refuge for a select few. She secured funding from the wealthy businessman Sergei Talsian to construct this city, intended to house their descendants. However, this secret connection to Atlas, a project that symbolizes the oppressive divide between the elite and the masses, creates a major conflict when Kuniko discovers the truth. Unable to receive a satisfactory explanation, Kuniko is forced to expel her grandmother from the Metal Age headquarters in Duomo.
Despite this rift, Nagiko later reappears and aids her granddaughter by negotiating with the Atlas administrator Ryoko to grant temporary shelter inside the city for the surface inhabitants. This assistance enables Metal Age to carry out a plan to burn Tokyo and eradicate the dangerous Daedulus entity. Nagiko’s motivations appear rooted in a long-term vision for humanity’s survival, even when her methods involve secrecy and compromise. She proves herself a capable strategist and negotiator, leveraging her historical role as Atlas’s founder to influence events. Though she initially comes across as an antagonist due to her authoritarian demeanor and hidden agenda, her later actions show a willingness to reconcile and support the greater good. Her notable abilities lie not in physical combat but in her intellect, foresight, and leadership, as well as her deep knowledge of the political and infrastructural systems underlying the world of Shangri-La.
