Description
Miiko Kumagai, originally named Tetsuo Kumagai, is a trans woman and a supporting character in the anime Shangri-La. She was taken in by Momoko in the Dogenzaka area after being picked up off the streets. Miiko tends to be an emotional and tearful person, often becoming a target for teasing or bullying from other members of the group. Her motivations shift over the course of the story, beginning with a desire to find a place where she belongs and later centering on protecting those she cares about, especially the young girl Mikuni.
After winning the Atlas Lottery, a program that allows a few people from the outer settlements to live inside the wealthy city of Atlas, Miiko is entrusted by Momoko with the task of reopening the Tropical Fish, a bar that hosts burlesque shows. However, she is instead sent to serve as a personal retainer to Mikuni in the Moon Palace. In this role, Miiko becomes a devoted attendant and companion to Mikuni, telling her stories about life outside Atlas and forming a close bond with the isolated child.
Two-thirds of the way through the story, Miiko is forcibly turned into a new vessel for the entity known as Hiruko through the arbitrary authority of Ryoko Naruse. Despite this, Miiko manages to fight against Hiruko’s personality and temporarily gains dominance over her own body. She is later taken away from Atlas, along with Mikuni, by the caretaker Sayoko. During the bombing of Neo Akihabara, Miiko sacrifices herself and Hiruko to shield Sayoko and Mikuni from the blast. In the final episode, she reappears as a spirit-like figure in front of Sayoko and Mikuni, bidding Mikuni a final farewell. She cures Mikuni of her debilitating illness and removes her supernatural ability, then asks Sayoko to take care of Mikuni like a real mother before disappearing along with the souls of other children who were sacrificed to protect Atlas.
Miiko’s notable abilities are tied to her role as Hiruko’s vessel. While possessed, she can resist the entity’s will and briefly take control. Her ultimate act of sacrifice involves using this possession to protect others and later to heal Mikuni. Throughout the series, her development is marked by a transformation from a timid, frequently victimized individual into someone who willingly gives everything for the sake of her friends. Her key relationships include a deep bond with Momoko, who acts as a mentor and friend, a close and caring connection with Mikuni, and a protective trust in Sayoko, who becomes a maternal figure to Mikuni after Miiko’s death.
