Description
Kaio-sama, also known as the North Kaio, is a deity responsible for governing the northern quadrant of the universe, the area that includes Earth. He resides on a small, miniature planet located at the very end of the long, winding Snake Way in the afterlife. This planet, despite its tiny size of roughly one hundred feet in diameter, possesses a gravity ten times that of Earth. He lives there with his two animal companions: Bubbles, a fast and agile monkey, and Gregory, a grasshopper with a talkative nature.
In terms of personality, Kaio-sama has a profound love for humor and considers himself a master of comedy in addition to being a martial arts master. He has a well-known affinity for telling puns and corny jokes, and he often judges the worthiness of potential students by their ability to make him laugh. Beneath this playful and sometimes eccentric exterior, he possesses great wisdom and serves as a valuable source of knowledge about the universe and its many threats.
Kaio-sama's primary role in the story is that of a mentor and guide to Goku and other Z Fighters. When Goku died fighting the Saiyan Raditz, he was sent to train with Kaio-sama in preparation for the arrival of the more powerful Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa. The training was harsh, requiring Goku to adapt to the intense gravity by chasing Bubbles to increase his speed and later hitting Gregory with a heavy mallet to build his strength. Through this training, Kaio-sama taught Goku two of his most significant and powerful techniques: the Kaiō-ken, which multiplies the user's power and speed, and the Spirit Bomb, an attack that gathers energy from all living things. Later, following the battle with the Saiyans, Kaio-sama also provided training and guidance from the afterlife to other fallen warriors including Piccolo, Tien Shinhan, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu.
One of Kaio-sama's most notable abilities is his universal telepathy. He can communicate mentally with anyone across the galaxy and can even allow others to speak through him by placing a hand on his back. He also possesses the ability to observe events happening anywhere on Earth from his small planet. Among his other divine powers are magic materialization, which allows him to create physical objects like clothing from nothing, and a unique healing ability that he performs using the antennae on his head.
Kaio-sama's key relationships are primarily with the heroes he mentors. He maintains a close, if often exasperated, bond with Goku, frequently providing telepathic advice and warnings from his planet. He also has a established rivalry with the West Kaio, which becomes particularly evident during the Other World Tournament in the afterlife. In terms of his character development, a significant event occurs during the battle with the android Cell. To save Earth, Goku uses his Instant Transmission to teleport a self-destructing Cell to Kaio-sama's small planet. The resulting explosion destroys the planet, killing Goku, Kaio-sama, Bubbles, and Gregory. Despite this, he continues to exist and train Goku in the afterlife, even serving as a mentor in the dimension of the dead.
