Description
Chaoz, known as Chiaotzu in many English versions, is a minor but distinct character in Dragon Ball Z Kai. He is a small, pale human with white skin, red cheeks, and a noticeable lack of a nose, giving him a doll-like appearance that belies his capabilities as a martial artist. His background before the main events of the series shows him as a student of the Crane School, trained under the villainous Master Shen alongside his lifelong best friend, Tenshinhan.
Chaoz's personality shifts significantly from his first appearance. Initially, as a product of the Crane School's ruthless teachings, he is a sadistic antagonist, needlessly cruel to opponents and taking glee in causing pain. However, he quickly abandons this path. After witnessing Tenshinhan's choice to fight with honor rather than kill for revenge, Chaoz follows his friend in defying Master Shen, rejecting an order to kill Tenshinhan and Goku. From this point forward, he becomes a reformed ally and a brave, if quiet, member of the Dragon Team His primary motivation is his unwavering loyalty to Tenshinhan, who he follows and supports without question. Despite his childish nature and his well-documented inability to solve even simple math problems, he is a courageous fighter who is always willing to help his friends, even when he is clearly outmatched
In the story, Chaoz is introduced as a rival to Krillin during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, where his psychic abilities allow him to manipulate the tournament bracket and attack his opponent's internal organs. After his reformation, he joins the other martial artists in their fight against the evil King Piccolo, where he attempts to wish for the Demon King's destruction but is quickly killed for his efforts. He is later revived and continues to play a minor yet memorable role. During the Saiyan invasion, knowing he cannot win, Chaoz heroically uses his self-destruction technique in a desperate and ultimately futile attempt to destroy the powerful warrior Nappa. After being killed a second time, he trains with King Kai in the afterlife, growing stronger before being wished back to life once more.
His key relationship is his unbreakable bond with Tenshinhan, who acts as his closest friend and protector. Chaoz is rarely seen away from Tenshinhan's side, and much of his development is tied to his friend's choices, from abandoning the Crane School to dedicating his life to martial arts training. Over the course of the series, Chaoz develops from a cruel villain into a selfless hero. While he eventually stops being an active combatant because the other fighters vastly outpace him in power, he never abandons his training or his place beside Tenshinhan.
Chaoz's most notable abilities are his psychic powers, including telekinesis and telepathy. He can paralyze opponents, lift objects with his mind, and attack an enemy's internal organs. He is also capable of traditional energy attacks like the Dodon Ray, which he fires from his finger. His most desperate technique is his self-destruction, a psychic explosion fueled by his own life force, which he used in a vain effort to stop Nappa.
