Description
Kaiō, often referred to as North Kaiō or King Kai, is a deity in the Dragon Ball universe who serves as the god responsible for overseeing the North quadrant of the universe. His domain includes the planet Earth, making him a figure of great importance to the series' main characters. He resides on a tiny planet located at the end of a long, winding path known as Snake Way, which exists within the Other World, the realm of the dead. Despite its small size, only about one hundred feet in diameter, his planet possesses a gravitational force ten times stronger than that of Earth. Kaiō lives there with his two companions, a fast-moving monkey named Bubbles and a grasshopper named Gregory.
Kaiō is depicted with blue skin, pointed ears, and antennae protruding from his forehead. He is almost always seen wearing a pair of teashade sunglasses, concealing his eyes, along with the traditional uniform of a Kaiō, which includes a dark mantle and a cap. More than his appearance, he is known for his distinct and unusual personality. He possesses a strong, often corny sense of humor and believes that the ability to tell a good joke is a vital quality, even for a martial artist. When a prospective student first arrives on his planet, he requires them to make him laugh as a form of initial test. Despite this lighthearted and sometimes silly demeanor, he possesses great wisdom and a deep understanding of the universe and its many powerful beings.
Kaiō's primary role in the story is that of a mentor and teacher to Goku and other Z-Fighters. After Goku dies for the first time battling Raditz, he is sent to train with Kaiō to prepare for the arrival of the much stronger Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa. Under Kaiō's grueling tutelage on the high-gravity planet, Goku masters two legendary techniques that become essential to his arsenal. The first is the Kaiō-ken, a technique that multiplies the user's ki, strength, speed, and reflexes for an instant, but at great risk of physical strain and exhaustion. The second is the Genki Dama, or Spirit Bomb, a powerful attack that gathers energy from surrounding life forms, plants, and the atmosphere to create a massive sphere of destructive force. Later, after Goku is revived, Kaiō also trains Goku's friends Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, and Chiaotzu when they travel to his planet following their own deaths.
Beyond his direct role as a teacher, Kaiō acts as a constant, unseen advisor to Goku. He possesses the ability to establish a telepathic link with any individual across the living universe and can also allow others to share this perception. He frequently uses this power to communicate with Goku during life-or-death battles, offering crucial advice and commentary on the strengths and weaknesses of formidable foes like Vegeta and Frieza. He also serves as an informational resource, such as when he uses his divine knowledge to locate the distant planet Namek for Goku. His role in the cosmos extends beyond training a single warrior, as he also presides over the North Galaxy and maintains relationships with his fellow deities: the Kaiō of the South, East, and West, as well as the Grand Kai, who rules over all four. These relationships are often portrayed as being competitive and quarrelsome, with Kaiō frequently engaging in disputes and rivalries, particularly with the boastful Kaiō of the West.
Kaiō undergoes a significant, albeit ironic, development when he is killed. During the battle with the bio-android Cell, Goku uses his Instant Transmission technique to teleport the self-destructing Cell away from Earth. He chooses to transport him to Kaiō's small planet. Cell’s subsequent explosion destroys the planet and kills both Goku and Kaiō, along with Bubbles and Gregory. Since Kaiō was already residing in the Other World at the time of his death, this event does not remove him from the story, but it becomes a source of great personal embarrassment and frustration for him, as he was a god who was killed by a mortal’s problem. Despite this, he continues his duties from the afterlife, guiding Goku through the Cell Games and later monitoring the threat of Majin Buu.
