Description
In the Dragon Ball Z Kai anime, a character known in some localizations as Chaos is more widely recognized by his original name, Chiaotzu. He is a diminutive, pale-skinned humanoid with distinctive red dots on his cheeks and a perpetually childlike appearance. He is introduced in the series not as a primary hero, but as a cunning and loyal student of the Crane School, a rival martial arts group to the Turtle School led by Master Shen.
Chaos initially displays a cruel and mischievous personality, shaped entirely by Master Shen's ruthless teachings. During the World Martial Arts Tournament, he uses his psychic powers without remorse, both to cheat in matches and to inflict serious harm on opponents, seemingly taking pleasure in their suffering. His core motivation at this point is solely to prove the superiority of the Crane School and to support his best friend and fellow student, Tenshinhan.
However, his allegiance and moral compass change dramatically after he witnesses Goku's merciful nature and the courage of the Turtle School fighters. This leads Chaos to defect from the Crane School alongside Tenshinhan. From that moment forward, his personality softens considerably. He becomes a quiet, courageous, and deeply loyal ally to the Z-Fighters. His primary motivation shifts from cruelty to selfless protection of his friends and the Earth. He is often seen following Tenshinhan's lead but possesses his own strong conviction, occasionally disobeying orders when he believes it serves a greater good, such as when he decides to sacrifice himself for the team.
Chaos's role in the story of Dragon Ball Z Kai, while not that of a main powerhouse, is that of a dedicated and supportive warrior. His most significant moment occurs during the battle against the Saiyans, Nappa and Vegeta. Realizing he is outmatched and seeing his friends in danger, Chaos performs a desperate act of bravery. He latches onto the back of the colossal Nappa and uses a self-detonation technique in a suicide attack, hoping to kill the enemy and save the others. The attack ultimately fails to harm Nappa, but the act itself solidifies his heroic nature and is a pivotal moment of grief that fuels Tenshinhan's subsequent assault. Following his death, he trains alongside other fallen heroes in the Other World under King Kai, learning new techniques.
The most crucial relationship for Chaos is his unwavering bond with Tenshinhan. They are inseparable, training together and fighting side-by-side for their entire lives. Tenshinhan often acts as a protective older brother, while Chaos provides emotional support and unwavering loyalty. He also forms working relationships with other Z-Fighters like Yamcha and Krillin, though he playfully mocks Krillin for flaws he himself shares, showing a harmless, childlike side to his personality.
Throughout his arc, Chaos develops from a malicious minor antagonist into a morally upright and heroic figure. Although he never becomes one of the strongest fighters, he consistently trains to improve his unique psychic abilities. By the later arcs of the series, he has become a reliable, if minor, ally in the defense of Earth, fully committed to the cause of good and the protection of his friends.
In terms of notable abilities, Chaos specializes in psychic and telekinetic powers. He can paralyze opponents with his mind, freeze them in place, or lift and throw objects without touching them. He also possesses the ability to fly using his ki, a skill known as Bukujutsu. His most notable, yet ultimately fatal, technique is a self-destruct attack that unleashes all of his stored energy in a massive, suicidal explosion. He is also seen using the Dodon Ray, a piercing finger-beam attack taught at the Crane School.
