Description
Kaioh-sama, also known as the North Kaio or Lord of the Worlds, is a deity who governs the northern quadrant of the universe, a region that includes Earth. He resides in the afterlife on a tiny planet located at the end of a long, winding path called Snake Way. This planet, despite its small size—only about one hundred feet in diameter—has a gravitational force ten times stronger than that of Earth. He lives there in a small house with his companions, a monkey named Bubbles and a grasshopper named Gregory. He is easily recognizable by his blue skin, antennae, traditional Chinese-style robes, and the teashade sunglasses he always wears.

In personality, Kaioh-sama is a complex figure who combines great wisdom and power with an eccentric and humorous disposition. He considers himself a legendary comedian and often tells jokes and puns which he finds hilarious, though others usually do not. In fact, he often requires potential students to make him laugh as a test of their worthiness before he agrees to train them. Despite this seemingly frivolous trait, he possesses profound knowledge about the universe and a deep sense of responsibility as a guardian deity. His motivations primarily revolve around maintaining the balance of his quadrant and ensuring powerful warriors are prepared to face threats that could disrupt the cosmos.

Kaioh-sama's primary role in the story is that of a martial arts master and mentor. When the hero Son Goku is killed in battle early on, he is sent to traverse Snake Way and seek out Kaioh-sama for training to defend Earth from powerful Saiyan invaders. Initially, Kaioh-sama confuses Goku's request for combat training with a request for comedy lessons, leading to a humorous misunderstanding. Once the situation is clarified, he becomes a crucial guide and teacher. He is responsible for instructing Goku in two of his most legendary and powerful techniques: the Kaioken and the Spirit Bomb. Beyond Goku, he also trains other fallen warriors, including Piccolo, Tien Shinhan, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu, helping them become stronger in the afterlife.

His key relationships are defined by his role as a teacher. His bond with Son Goku is the most significant, evolving from a master-student dynamic into a lasting friendship. He frequently uses his ability to telepathically communicate across vast distances to offer Goku advice and warnings about looming dangers like Frieza. He also has a professional relationship with the other three Kaio, who govern the other quadrants, as well as his own superior, the Grand Kai. An important and unfortunate event occurs when Goku teleports the self-destructing android Cell to Kaioh-sama's small planet in a desperate attempt to save Earth. The resulting explosion destroys the planet and kills Kaioh-sama, along with Bubbles and Gregory. However, as he already resides in the afterlife, his death does not fundamentally change his existence; he continues to watch over Goku and the universe, even training him further during the seven years Goku remains dead. According to the original author, the reason Kaioh-sama's planet is so small is that it was destroyed in the past by the God of Destruction, Beerus, and Kaioh-sama rebuilt it from a surviving fragment.

Regarding his abilities, Kaioh-sama is an immensely powerful being, though his power is more focused on wisdom and technique than raw combat strength. His signature ability is telepathy, which allows him to see and speak with anyone across the entire universe. He is the creator of the Kaioken technique, which multiplies the user's ki and physical abilities for a short burst, and the Spirit Bomb, an attack that gathers energy from all living things to form a devastating sphere. Ironically, while he invented these techniques, he admits he never mastered them himself, and it was Goku who successfully learned to use them in battle. He also possesses other godly abilities, such as materializing objects out of thin air. Over the course of the narrative, Kaioh-sama develops from a distant, eccentric master into a reliable and caring, if occasionally irritable, mentor who is deeply invested in the protection of the universe.
