Description
Kami Sama is the Namekian who served as the long-time Guardian of the Earth in the Dragon Ball universe. His origins trace back to his birth on the planet Namek, where he was the son of a Namekian named Katas. As a child, he was sent away from his home planet in a spaceship to ensure his survival. Upon arriving on Earth, he waited for decades for his parents to arrive, but they never came. This nameless Namekian eventually learned of the role of Guardian of the Earth, a position that could only be held by someone pure of heart. To achieve this purity, he expelled all the evil from his being in a process that created two separate entities: the good half became Kami Sama, while the evil half became the dreaded Demon King Piccolo. As the Guardian, Kami took up residence at the Lookout high above the world, accompanied by his mysterious attendant, Mr. Popo. He also used his abilities as a member of the Dragon Clan to create the Dragon Balls and the Eternal Dragon Shenron, giving the people of Earth the ability to wish for miracles.
In terms of personality, Kami is generally portrayed as a wise and peaceful being, though he possesses a notable complexity. Having lived for centuries, he has grown somewhat reclusive, and the guardian does not appreciate uninvited guests. His long observation of humanity made him distrustful of people, as he came to view them as selfish, until he encountered the pure-hearted Goku, which renewed his faith in them. Despite his divine role, Kami feels a deep sense of unworthiness for his title. He carries the guilt of knowing that the evil Demon King Piccolo, and later his son Piccolo Jr., exist because of his decision to expel his darkness. This connection means his death would also mean theirs, a fact that sometimes leads him to consider ending his own life to eliminate the great evil plaguing the Earth. He does have a somewhat dry or sharp tongue, notably becoming snarky or sarcastic on occasion, and he does not appreciate having his divine authority questioned by others like King Kai. His primary motivation as the Guardian is the protection of Earth and its people. However, as new, unimaginably powerful threats emerge that far exceed his own strength, his role shifts from a direct defender to a mentor and support figure.
Kami's role in the story is crucial, as he is the source of the Dragon Balls and a mentor to the next generation of Earth's protectors. When news of the Saiyan invasion arrives, it is Kami who facilitates Goku's training with King Kai in the afterlife. On Earth, he summons the Z-Fighters to the Lookout and has Mr. Popo train them for the coming battle. His connection to Piccolo is the most significant of his key relationships. While Piccolo is his evil counterpart and they are initially enemies, their fates are inextricably linked to the point that when Piccolo is killed, Kami also dies, which turns the Dragon Balls to stone. After being revived, his relationship with Piccolo evolves, with Kami approaching him for conversation and Piccolo eventually seeking him out to fuse. This leads to Kami's most important act of development: during the Cell Saga, he agrees to permanently fuse with Piccolo, the son of his evil half, to re-form their original, nameless being. By doing so, Kami gives up his individual existence and memories, residing now as a voice in Piccolo's consciousness and granting Piccolo a tremendous increase in power and wisdom.
Regarding notable abilities, Kami is a powerful martial artist and possesses a wide array of supernatural techniques despite being surpassed in raw power by later villains and heroes. His most defining ability is materialization, which allowed him to create the Dragon Balls and Shenron, as well as conjure physical objects like new clothes. As Guardian, he can use the Far-Seeing Arts to observe any event occurring on Earth from his Lookout and can communicate telepathically across vast distances, even to the Other World. In combat, he has demonstrated the use of the Evil Containment Wave on his counterpart Piccolo Jr., flight, energy blasts like the Eye Lasers and Explosive Wave, the Afterimage Technique, and the Instantaneous Movement technique to travel between the living world and the afterlife. He also attempted Self-Destruction against the immortal Garlic Jr., though he was stopped by Goku and Piccolo before he could perish. After fusing with Piccolo, his consciousness remains, providing strategic advice and knowledge to Piccolo in critical battles, including against Imperfect Cell and during the Tournament of Power.
