Description
Ginnosuke Isuzu is a central character from the anime Tokyo Underground, known for being the steadfast and intelligent best friend of the protagonist, Rumina Asagi. He is a teenage boy with black hair worn to chest length and blue eyes, though his most defining physical trait is his very thick glasses, which alter his appearance so drastically that his friends often cannot recognize him without them. Ginnosuke and Rumina have been best friends since childhood, sharing an ordinary life as high school freshmen in Tokyo before being thrust into an extraordinary conflict.
Personality-wise, Ginnosuke is portrayed as timid and cautious, possessing a demeanor that contrasts with the more impulsive and hot-headed nature of his friend Rumina. He has a great deal of common sense and is highly intelligent, though his knowledge is more academic than practical, as he is noted to lack what is referred to as street smarts. Despite his generally reserved and somewhat nervous disposition, Ginnosuke is fiercely loyal and can become remarkably brave and determined when the situation calls for it, especially when his friends are in danger. The core of his motivation is his friendship with Rumina; he accompanies his friend on a dangerous mission into the dangerous world known as Underground, not because he seeks adventure, but out of a deep sense of loyalty and a desire to protect those he cares about.
In the story, Ginnosuke occupies the vital role of the brains of the group. While others, including Rumina and the elemental user Chelsea Rorec, possess powerful supernatural abilities, Ginnosuke is initially unique among the main cast for lacking any elemental powers of his own. His value comes from his sharp intellect, which he uses to analyze situations, devise plans, and provide strategic support to his more powerful companions. However, he is not a non-combatant. As the adventure progresses, Ginnosuke acquires a special piece of equipment: a weapon that allows him to fire elemental attacks, which he uses to fight fiercely and play a more direct role in protecting his friends.
His primary and most significant relationship is with Rumina Asagi. They are portrayed as inseparable friends who have known each other since childhood, and their bond is the emotional anchor for Ginnosuke's involvement in the plot. He also becomes a trusted ally to the girls they rescue, Chelsea Rorec and Ruri Sarasa, providing a reliable and sensible presence within the group dynamic. Throughout the series, Ginnosuke undergoes a clear development from a somewhat timid and ordinary student into a braver and more capable individual. He rises to the immense challenges of the Underground, proving his courage in combat and solidifying his role as an indispensable member of the team, not just as a brain, but as a fighter in his own right. His most notable abilities are his intelligence, his common sense, and his proficiency with the elemental weapon he wields that compensates for his lack of natural powers.
