OVA
Description
In the context of the Ranma 1/2 OAV, the character in question is Ukyo Kuonji, a sixteen-year-old martial artist and the proprietor of a traveling okonomiyaki restaurant. Her history is deeply intertwined with Ranma Saotome, whom she first met during a training journey when both were six years old. Ukyo is the daughter of an okonomiyaki vendor, and her father proposed an engagement between the two children, offering his food cart as a dowry. When the young Ranma, unaware that his playmate was a girl, answered that he preferred okonomiyaki over her, his father Genma seized the cart and fled, leaving Ukyo humiliated and abandoned. This event is the defining trauma of her life, shaping her personality and goals for the next decade.

As a result of this perceived betrayal, Ukyo swore revenge against the Saotome family. To pursue this goal, she abandoned her femininity and chose to live and dress as a boy, even attending an all-boys school. She channeled her anger and determination into training in a unique martial art based entirely on the preparation of okonomiyaki. Upon tracking Ranma to Furinkan High School, she confronts him disguised as a male classmate. However, during their ensuing duel, Ranma inadvertently discovers her true gender, leading to a reconciliation rather than a revenge. She forgives Ranma for the childhood misunderstanding, re-establishes their old friendship, and reasserts her position as his fiancée, opening an okonomiyaki shop called Ucchan’s where she lives and works independently.

Ukyo possesses a strong, independent, and competitive personality, forged by her difficult childhood. Despite her boyish appearance and the fact that she wears a male school uniform, she harbors a traditionally feminine desire to be a good wife and is frequently described as cute or having a girlish heart. This contrast between her tough, self-sufficient exterior and her hidden romantic sincerity is a central aspect of her character. Among Ranma’s many suitors, she is generally considered the most stable, level-headed, and emotionally mature. She typically avoids the more aggressive or overtly violent schemes of her rivals, preferring more direct and practical approaches. Nonetheless, she can become fiercely possessive and jealous when it comes to winning Ranma’s affection. She maintains a relatively friendly but competitive rivalry with Akane Tendo, as well as a more hostile and bitter rivalry with Shampoo and Kodachi Kuno, whom she sees as threats. She also has an admirer in Tsubasa Kurenai, a cross-dressing boy she knew from her time in an all-boys school.

In her role within the story, Ukyo is one of Ranma’s primary love interests and a recurring ally. She successfully re-establishes her childhood friendship with Ranma, affectionately calling him Ran-chan while he calls her Ucchan. Despite her romantic feelings, Ranma generally treats her as a dear friend, though he shows more tolerance for her advances than he does for those of others. Her personal journey involves moving past her initial desire for revenge and settling into a stable life at her restaurant, from which she continues to pursue her dream of marrying Ranma while participating in the various martial arts battles and comedic incidents that arise. She is willing to go to great lengths for him, including risking her business and her craft.

As a martial artist, Ukyo is exceptionally skilled and is considered one of the strongest female characters in the series, certainly surpassing Akane Tendo in combat ability. Her fighting style is a hereditary culinary martial art that treats the preparation of okonomiyaki as a form of combat. Her primary weapon is a giant, multi-purpose spatula she calls Masamune, which she wears strapped to her back. For ranged attacks, she carries a bandolier of small spatulas that she throws with great precision, similar to shuriken. Her techniques include using flour to create smokescreens, blinding flashes, and restrictive batter. One of her signature special moves is the Battle Dragon, where she launches okonomiyaki dough that takes the form of a dragon to strike her opponent. Her passion for cooking is directly linked to her fighting spirit; if her emotional resolve wavers, so too can the quality and power of her okonomiyaki and her techniques. She has shown the ability to use her battle aura to predict oncoming attacks, and she possesses superhuman physical characteristics, speed, and agility that allow her to perform feats such as catching projectiles out of the air.
