Description
Hiro Soma is a significant supporting character in Fruits Basket, known for being the youngest member of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, cursed with the spirit of the sheep or ram. He is a boy of elementary school age, approximately eleven to twelve years old for most of the story, with a small, youthful appearance that belies his sharp mind and even sharper tongue. His dark brown hair and brown eyes are consistent features across the manga and later anime adaptation.

Hiro's defining characteristic is his precocious, confrontational, and often abrasive personality. He is exceptionally intelligent and articulate for his age, frequently using complex vocabulary and arguing in circles around adults, a skill that can be both impressive and irritating. He is quick to criticize, deliver sarcastic remarks, and complain, often acting as though he is more mature than everyone around him. This behavior masks a deep-seated insecurity and a profound sense of guilt. Underneath his prickly exterior, Hiro is a sensitive and caring boy who is acutely aware of his own failings and desperately wants to grow up to be someone who can protect the people he loves. He frequently regrets his harsh words after the fact and struggles to express his honest feelings, which often come out as anger or provocation instead. He is self-critical, hating the childish part of himself that lashes out, and is on a constant, if difficult, journey to become kinder and more sincere.

Hiro’s role in the story is deeply tied to his relationships within the Sohma family. His most important relationship is with Kisa Sohma, the tiger of the zodiac, whom he loves dearly. His backstory is marked by a pivotal mistake: in an attempt to be mature and honest, he confessed his love for Kisa to the family's head, Akito. In a fit of rage, Akito brutally attacked Kisa, sending her to the hospital. Overwhelmed by guilt and believing his affection was dangerous, Hiro distanced himself from Kisa, even when he learned she was being bullied at school. When Tohru Honda reached out and befriended Kisa, helping her recover, Hiro was consumed with jealousy, seeing Tohru as a rival who succeeded where he had failed. This jealousy initially makes him hostile toward Tohru, leading him to steal a precious keepsake of her mother's. However, Tohru’s unwavering kindness helps him confront his guilt and realize that his self-loathing is a form of cowardice. She reassures him that his desire to grow up and his admission of weakness are, in fact, signs of courage, planting the seed for him to become the "prince" who can protect Kisa.

Another crucial relationship is with his mother, Satsuki, and his baby sister, Hinata. Unlike many cursed Sohma children, Hiro was raised in a warm, loving, and supportive home, particularly by his cheerful mother. When his mother becomes pregnant and gives birth to Hinata, Hiro takes on the role of an adoring and protective big brother. The birth of his innocent younger sister prompts further self-reflection, making him realize how consumed he has been by his own vanity and fear, and solidifying his goal to become a stronger protector. He also shares a significant, tense relationship with Isuzu "Rin" Sohma. Hiro accidentally witnesses Akito pushing Rin from a window, causing her serious injury. Bound by a promise to Rin not to tell anyone, he carries the heavy burden of this secret; his eventual confession of the truth to Rin’s partner, Hatsuharu, marks a major step in his development of courage and honesty.

Throughout the series, Hiro undergoes considerable development. He moves from being a guilt-ridden, jealous, and sarcastic child to a more self-aware and gentle adolescent. He works actively to control his sharp tongue and becomes more patient and considerate, especially as a brother to Hinata. His greatest moment of development is tied directly to the central conflict of the series: the zodiac curse. In a significant turn of events, Hiro is one of the first among the younger generation to have his curse break. The first thing he does is rush to hold his baby sister, Hinata, for the first time without transforming, an act that brings him to tears and symbolizes his newfound freedom. By the story's end, he and Kisa are implied to be a couple, with a more honest and open relationship than he ever thought possible.

As a member of the zodiac, Hiro possesses the notable ability of transforming into his animal form, a sheep or lamb, whenever he is embraced by a person of the opposite sex or when his body is under great physical stress. In his younger years, this form is that of a small, fluffy lamb. This transformation is at the core of his character's conflict, contributing to his feelings of powerlessness and his desperate desire to grow up and break free from the curse that controls his life.
