TV-Series
Description
Kagura Soma is a member of the Soma family who is cursed by the spirit of the boar, the twelfth animal of the Chinese zodiac. When embraced by a person of the opposite sex or when her body undergoes significant stress, she transforms into a small brown boar.
In terms of appearance, Kagura is a petite young woman with a cute and feminine look. She has large, round dark brown eyes and straight, dark brown hair that reaches her upper back, which she often wears down or in braids. She is approximately 160.5 centimeters tall. A notable part of her attire is a cat-shaped backpack, which she carries frequently. She is slightly older than the main protagonist, Tohru Honda, being two academic years above her and attending a private women's junior college.
Kagura possesses a strikingly dual personality. In most situations, she presents herself as a sweet, polite, considerate, and somewhat shy and dreamy young woman. However, she is also strong-willed and impulsive, with a hidden, explosive temper that is triggered most intensely by her feelings for her cousin, Kyo Soma. When these strong emotions well up, she loses control and becomes extremely violent, forceful, and aggressive, often physically beating Kyo with tremendous strength. This behavior is less about malice and more a result of emotional immaturity and a lack of restraint, embodying the charging force of the boar spirit. She has a notable lack of respect for personal space, frequently hugging Kyo and other zodiac members like Yuki. This violent alter-ego is considered one of the most pronounced in the series, second only to Hatsuharu Soma's "Black" personality. Despite her volatile nature, she is genuinely friendly and has a big-sisterly disposition, as noted by the series' author.
The motivation behind Kagura's obsessive love for Kyo is rooted in a complicated history of guilt and self-deception. As a child, Kagura despised being part of the zodiac and felt responsible for her parents' arguments. When she met a five-year-old Kyo, who was despised and isolated as the bearer of the cat spirit, she felt a sense of relief that someone else was less fortunate than herself. She began playing with him out of pity, and Kyo, unaware of her true motives, accepted her as his first real friend. One day, Kagura forcibly removed the beaded bracelet that suppressed Kyo's true, monstrous form. Horrified by what she saw, she ran away in fear, abandoning him.
Overwhelmed by guilt for her pity-driven friendship and for running away, Kagura tried to erase her shame by convincing herself that she loved Kyo. She believed that if she could accept and love Kyo as the "monster," she could transform herself into a beautiful, non-judgmental person, and her past selfish actions would be negated. This resulted in her becoming violently and possessively fixated on him, insisting that they were destined to be together, even claiming he had proposed to her as a child by threatening him with a knife or a boulder.
Within the story, Kagura serves as a foil to Tohru in Kyo's life. Her aggressive, guilt-fueled pursuit contrasts sharply with Tohru's gentle, accepting nature. Her primary role is to explore the theme of what true love is versus love born of pity or a desire for self-salvation. She is also a source of comedic violence and chaotic energy in her early appearances.
Her relationships with other characters are key to her development. Her central relationship is with Kyo Soma, the target of her obsessive affection. She is good friends with Ritsu Soma, the spirit of the monkey, and is part of a friendship group with other zodiac members. She develops a complex relationship with Tohru Honda, initially viewing her as a romantic rival but eventually coming to respect her. She lives with her parents, who are loving and take her double-edged personality in stride, and also provides a home for her fellow zodiac member Isuzu "Rin" Soma.
Kagura undergoes significant character development. Her obsessive love is eventually challenged by Rin, leading to a period of self-reflection. She ultimately confesses the selfish, pity-driven origin of her feelings to Kyo, apologizes for her behavior, and lets him go, acknowledging that his heart belongs to Tohru. This moment of honesty allows her personality to mellow into a gentler, more emotionally mature young woman with fewer violent outbursts. After the zodiac curse is broken, she finds happiness pursuing a career as a nursery school teacher.
Notable abilities include her immense physical strength, which is significantly greater than an average person and is on par with Kyo's, likely due to training at his master's dojo. This strength allows her to cause considerable destruction, especially in her emotional outbursts. She is also creative and enjoys making handmade crafts, particularly cat-themed items.
