Description
Kagari, also known by the designation number 06, is a Sekirei who presents a unique case among his kind due to his unstable and fluid gender, which is said to be influenced by the desires of his Ashikabi. He initially operates under two identities: as Kagari, he is a popular and well-dressed entertainer at a host club, skilled at seduction as he searches for a female Ashikabi, and as Homura, he adopts the persona of a masked guardian who defends Sekirei without an Ashikabi, wearing a long black coat. This dual life is a source of a running gag, as other characters frequently fail to recognize that Kagari and Homura are the same person.
In terms of personality, Kagari is generally calm, collected, and rational, often serving as the most level-headed member of Minato Sahashi's group of Sekirei. He is known for his gentle nature but can become quick-tempered, particularly when the subject is Minaka, the creator of the Sekirei Plan, whom he harbors a deep-seated hatred for playing with the lives of Sekirei. This animosity is so strong that even after being winged, his goal to kill Minaka remains unchanged. Unlike many of his fellow Sekirei, Kagari is not openly possessive of his Ashikabi and often finds the open affection shown by the others to be embarrassing, frequently convincing himself that he is not interested in such displays. This internal conflict is heightened by the fact that he was winged by a man, Minato, which makes his own romantic reactions to his Ashikabi feel strange and uncomfortable to him.
Kagari's primary motivation shifts over the course of the story. Initially, his driving goal is to kill Minaka as revenge for the suffering inflicted upon Sekirei. He is also deeply committed to protecting unwinged Sekirei, a mission he undertook as the Sekirei Guardian. After being winged by Minato, while his hatred for Minaka does not fade, his role becomes intertwined with the fate of his new Ashikabi and his fellow Sekirei, learning to rely on them rather than shouldering every burden alone.
Regarding his role in the story, Kagari is the sixth and final Sekirei to be winged by the protagonist, Minato Sahashi. His unwinged state becomes a major point of contention, inciting a large-scale battle among Ashikabi who seek to claim him. Due to his extensive combat experience from fighting as a guardian, Kagari acts as one of Minato's key strategic advisors alongside Matsu, often providing calm and rational counsel in dangerous situations. His integration into Minato's group marks a significant turning point, both for his own development and for the balance of power in the Sekirei Plan.
Key relationships define much of Kagari's character arc. His bond with his Ashikabi, Minato Sahashi, is the most transformative. Minato is the one who ultimately wings him, saving him from being consumed by his own uncontrollable power. More uniquely, Minato's influence is what triggers Kagari's physical and emotional changes, as his attraction to Minato causes his body to gradually shift from male to female. Kagari shares a notable rivalry with Tsukiumi, who calls herself his rival, yet ironically fails to recognize him in his different personas; she often teases him about his feelings for Minato. His relationship with the other Sekirei in Minato's group is one of a protective, if somewhat aloof, guardian.
Throughout the series, Kagari undergoes significant development. Before being winged, his immense fire powers were unstable and threatened to consume him. The act of being winged by Minato stabilizes his abilities but also triggers his gender transformation, forcing him to confront his identity and his feelings for his Ashikabi. Initially struggling with his attraction to Minato and finding it strange, he eventually begins to find a measure of peace with his situation, learning that he does not need to take on every battle or burden by himself.
Kagari's notable abilities center on the generation and manipulation of fire, which is reflected in his name meaning flame. He can shape his flames into various forms, including a dragon, a serpent, or a simple fireball. Signature techniques include Enryu, or fire dragon. Before being winged, his power was dangerously unstable, but after being bound to Minato, he gains greater control. His fire-based attacks can also be combined with Tsukiumi's water abilities to create powerful steam-based attacks. Even before being winged, he was speculated to be the strongest unwinged Sekirei, capable of fending off powerful opponents like Akitsu, though his power was on the verge of consuming him entirely.
