Description
Hong Long is a fictional character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam 00. He serves as the personal assistant, bodyguard, and older brother to Wang Liu Mei, while also acting as an agent for the paramilitary organization Celestial Being. Born on December 26, 2285, his name translates to Red Dragon from Chinese.
Born into the wealthy and influential Wang family, Hong Long was originally groomed from a young age to become the future head of the family. However, his family came to believe he lacked the necessary strategic and leadership qualities required for such a role. Consequently, the position of family head was passed to his younger sister, Wang Liu Mei. Far from showing bitterness or resentment over this decision, Hong Long accepted his new position with contentment and loyalty, becoming her dedicated guardian and assistant. Unbeknownst to him, Liu Mei harbored a quiet resentment for her brother's inability to fulfill his destined role, as it forced her into a position that she felt distorted her own life.
In terms of personality, Hong Long is defined by his unwavering loyalty to Wang Liu Mei and the Wang family. While he functions as an agent of Celestial Being, his true allegiance is not to the organization itself but solely to his sister, whose safety he prioritizes above his own. He is consistently depicted at her side, vigilant and devoted, performing his duties as both a butler and a protector without question. As the series progresses into its second season, he begins to privately question some of Liu Mei's methods, particularly as she becomes involved with the Innovators, but he continues to loyally carry out her will despite his concerns.
Hong Long's primary motivation is the service and protection of Wang Liu Mei. He sees his role as her bodyguard and assistant as his life's purpose, and he acts as an extension of her will in their dealings with Celestial Being and other factions. His actions are driven by a sense of duty and familial obligation, even when his sister's plans place them in grave danger.
Within the story, Hong Long plays a supporting role as an informant and operative for Celestial Being's World Armed Intervention Campaign. Early in the first season, he assists in investigating a terrorist group blackmailing Celestial Being by using his skills to trace financial transactions and internet data. He later participates directly in a ground mission to rescue a political hostage in Azadistan. Hong Long rides inside the Gundam Dynames to the rescue site, where he uses his martial arts prowess to single-handedly subdue numerous armed opponents while Lockon Stratos provides sniper support. In the second season, after Celestial Being is forced into hiding, Hong Long accompanies Liu Mei as she attempts to navigate between the reborn organization and the Innovators. His role becomes more tragic as he follows his sister into an increasingly dangerous web of betrayal, culminating in their final journey to the space colony Eclipse with Nena Trinity.
Hong Long's most significant relationship is with his sister, Wang Liu Mei. This bond is complex and defined by an inversion of traditional familial hierarchy; he is the elder sibling who serves the younger. He refers to her formally as Miss, a reflection of his self-assigned role as her subordinate. Despite his constant loyalty, Liu Mei's hidden resentment creates an emotional distance that he may not fully perceive. Another key relationship, though antagonistic, is with Nena Trinity. Nena acts as their pilot to a resource satellite in the second season, but she eventually betrays them. Nena's hatred for Liu Mei leads to a lethal confrontation in which Hong Long makes the ultimate sacrifice for his sister.
Hong Long undergoes limited personal development, remaining steadfastly loyal to his sister until his death. However, the circumstances surrounding his end reveal his capacity for independent agency and self-sacrifice. Trapped with Liu Mei on Eclipse after Nena Trinity sabotages their ship, Hong Long tends to his injured sister. When Nena arrives to kill them, Hong Long makes a final, desperate choice. As Nena opens fire, he physically shields Liu Mei, taking multiple bullets to his back. With his last strength, he pushes her through a nearby door to safety and attempts to halt their attacker before being shot in the head and killed. His sacrifice, while heroic, ultimately proves in vain as Liu Mei is killed by Nena moments later. This act represents the fullest expression of his core motivation: a willingness to give his own life for his sister.
Hong Long possesses several notable abilities. He is highly proficient in martial arts, with his fighting style suggested to be Northern Style Kung Fu. He demonstrates this expertise by disarming and defeating multiple armed mercenaries using only his hands and feet. Beyond his physical combat skills, he is also a skilled investigator, capable of information gathering and computer hacking. Additionally, he is a trained pilot, often operating the Wang family's VTOL craft and the Trinity mothership. Despite his combat prowess, he is never seen using firearms, suggesting a preference for or proficiency only in unarmed combat. Physically, he stands at 185 centimeters tall and weighs 66 kilograms.
