Description
Neo Roanoke is the amnesiac identity assumed by Mu La Flaga in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. Mu La Flaga was a prominent Earth Alliance pilot during the First Alliance-PLANT War, earning the nickname Hawk of Endymion for single-handedly destroying five ZAFT mobile suits in the Battle of Endymion. He was thought to have died at the end of the war when he used his mobile suit to shield the spacecraft Archangel from a devastating attack by Rau Le Creuset. However, he survived with severe injuries and total memory loss. The Earth Alliance recovered him, gave him the fabricated identity Neo Roanoke, and placed him as the captain of the special forces unit Phantom Pain, taking direct orders from Lord Djibril.
As Neo Roanoke, he commands the Extended pilots Sting Oakley, Stella Loussier, and Auel Neider, deploying them in high-stakes missions. He pilots the GAT-04 Windam on Earth and the TS-MA4F Exass mobile armor in space, and later takes control of the ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam after Sting Oakley's death. His personality in this state is characterized by a cold devotion to military duty and a willingness to manipulate subordinates; for instance, he uses false promises and memory modification to keep Stella under control. Despite this, he occasionally questions the purpose of the fighting and shows moments of self-awareness about his actions.
Encounters with the Archangel and its captain, Murrue Ramius, gradually trigger the return of his original memories. Murrue recognizes his physical resemblance to Mu, and repeated contact causes fragments of his past to resurface. Over time, his demeanor shifts toward the more confident, carefree, and sarcastic personality he had as Mu La Flaga, including repeating the phrase I can make the impossible possible. After being captured by the Archangel, he joins the Orb United Emirates Defense Force and pilots the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam. In the final battle of the series, he once again protects the Archangel from a powerful attack, fully reclaiming his identity.
