Description
Muruta Azrael is a human born in the Cosmic Era year 41, a Natural, and the fanatical leader of the anti-Coordinator terrorist organization Blue Cosmos during the First Alliance-PLANT War. His deep-seated hatred for Coordinators stems from being assaulted by a group of them when he was young, an experience that shaped his lifelong mission to eliminate all genetically enhanced humans and create what he called a blue and pure world. Beyond his role in Blue Cosmos, Azrael holds immense political and economic power as the president of a major weapons manufacturing conglomerate and as a director of the Defense Industry Association, giving him significant influence over the Earth Alliance leadership. He comes across as calm and personable at first glance, but beneath that exterior lies a ruthless, manipulative, and utterly unyielding individual who believes the ends justify any means, including sacrificing allied forces and innocent civilians.

Azrael’s main role in the story is that of a primary antagonist who escalates the war through duplicity and technological warfare. He orchestrates the activation of the Cyclops System at the JOSH-A base in Alaska, knowingly sacrificing Earth Alliance soldiers to lure ZAFT forces into a trap and weaken the enemy while simultaneously consolidating the Atlantic Federation’s dominance over the Earth Alliance. He later pushes for an invasion of the neutral Orb Union when its leader refuses to hand over its particle accelerator, personally overseeing the attack and deploying the newly developed GAT-X131 Calamity, GAT-X252 Forbidden, and GAT-X370 Raider mobile suits alongside mass-produced Strike Daggers. Following Orb’s self-destruction, Azrael moves to space aboard the battleship Dominion and obtains the N‑Jammer Canceller data from Flay Allster. He uses his influence to convince the Alliance to launch nuclear weapons equipped with these devices against the PLANTs, aiming for total genocide rather than using the technology to solve Earth’s energy crisis.

Throughout the series, Azrael interacts with several key figures. He works closely with Rau Le Creuset, who provides him with strategic intelligence. He clashes with Natarle Badgiruel, the captain of the Dominion, who eventually rebels against his murderous orders; during a struggle, he shoots her, but both are killed when the Archangel destroys the Dominion. His relationship with the Archangel crew is adversarial, and he views the Freedom and Justice mobile suits as dangerous anomalies due to their nuclear power. He also oversees the development of the Extended, biologically enhanced soldiers such as Clotho Buer and Shani Andras, whom he treats as disposable tools.

Azrael’s notable abilities lie not in combat but in his sharp strategic mind, his talent for manipulation, and his vast network of industrial and political connections. He is a master of deploying advanced weapons and psychological warfare, and his unshakeable conviction drives him to pursue his genocidal goal even as the war turns against him. However, his fanaticism also blinds him to the possibility of coexistence, and his desperation grows after witnessing the destructive power of the GENESIS weapon. In the final stages of the conflict, he becomes more reckless, ultimately leading to his death aboard the Dominion as the Archangel fires upon it. Muruta Azrael stands as a chilling representation of ideological extremism amplified by wealth and power, whose actions leave a lasting scar on the Cosmic Era.
