Description
Nicol Amarfi is a character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam Seed. He is a fifteen-year-old Coordinator who serves as a pilot for ZAFT, the military force of the genetically enhanced inhabitants of the PLANTs. As the youngest member of the elite Le Creuset team, he pilots the captured Earth Alliance mobile suit known as the GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, a stealth-oriented machine equipped with the Mirage Colloid system that allows it to become temporarily invisible. Born on March 1 in the Cosmic Era, Nicol stands 165 centimeters tall and has blood type B. His father is a member of the PLANT Supreme Council, a position that places Nicol within a prominent political family.

Nicol is defined by a gentle, kind, and dignified demeanor. He is the most open-hearted and pleasant member of the Le Creuset team, carrying himself with a calm and thoughtful presence that sets him apart from his more aggressive comrades. He is a reluctant soldier who feels genuine sympathy for the casualties of the war and wishes to see the conflict end quickly. His sentimental and compassionate nature often earns him the contempt of his teammates Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman, who view him as weak or cowardly. However, Nicol does not let their harsh words change who he is. He continues to carry himself with grace and a sense of duty, believing that he must fight to protect the PLANTs even though he dislikes the violence. His motivations are rooted in a desire to protect others rather than in any personal ambition or thirst for battle. He fights because he feels it is his responsibility, not because he enjoys combat.

Within the story, Nicol is introduced during the ZAFT attack on the neutral space colony Heliopolis, where the Le Creuset team steals five prototype mobile suits from the Earth Alliance. Nicol is assigned to the Blitz Gundam and quickly adapts its operating system for ZAFT use. He participates in several key engagements, including the infiltration of the Artemis fortress, where he uses his mobile suit's stealth capabilities to help his mother ship breach a powerful defensive barrier. His role in the narrative is that of a supporting character whose presence provides emotional depth and contrast to the other members of his team. His most significant story function comes through his relationship with Athrun Zala, a fellow pilot he looks up to like an older brother. Nicol adores Athrun and the two share a close bond. Athrun, in turn, values Nicol's friendship and kindness. Nicol often serves as a voice of reason and compassion within the group, offering a softer perspective amid the militaristic environment.

Nicol's death occurs during a battle near Orb when he attempts to protect Athrun from an attack by the Strike Gundam, piloted by Kira Yamato. In shielding his friend, Nicol is killed when his mobile suit is destroyed. This event serves as a major turning point in the series. His death profoundly affects Athrun, who is consumed by grief and a desire for revenge. It also impacts Yzak and Dearka, deepening their own anger and sorrow. Nicol's passing becomes a catalyst for Athrun's growing disillusionment with the war and the cycle of violence. Beyond his combat abilities, Nicol is also a talented pianist. His love for music and his gentle nature are recurring elements that emphasize his youth and innocence, standing in stark contrast to the brutal reality of the conflict he is forced to participate in. He is a reminder of the human cost of war and the personal losses that occur even among those who fight for what they believe is right. His character arc, though brief, highlights the tragedy of losing someone who seeks peace even while being compelled to fight.
