Description
Natarle Badgiruel is a career Earth Alliance officer who serves as the executive officer of the warship Archangel during the First Alliance-PLANT War. She comes from a long line of military professionals, with her family having served the Earth Alliance for seven generations. Her background instills in her a profound sense of duty and an unwavering commitment to military hierarchy and protocol. Natarle is a Natural, meaning she was not genetically enhanced like Coordinators, and she holds a degree of distrust toward them, though this is tempered by her professionalism.

Her personality is defined by strict adherence to regulations, discipline, and mission-first thinking. She is characterized as a superb tactical analyst with keen judgment and the ability to make swift, calculated decisions under pressure. Her composure often helps steady the Archangel during combat. However, her rigid, by-the-book attitude frequently brings her into conflict with the Archangel’s acting captain, Murrue Ramius, who is more willing to bend rules for humanitarian reasons or to protect civilians. Natarle’s motivations are rooted in her belief that following orders and upholding military discipline are the most effective paths to victory and order. She initially views the war in stark terms of duty versus insubordination.

As the story progresses, Natarle is gradually exposed to the moral complexity of the conflict. She is disturbed when she learns that her superiors planned to sacrifice allied Eurasian forces, and later is horrified by the Earth Alliance’s use of nuclear weapons against the PLANTs. These events begin to crack her faith in blind obedience. After being reassigned from the Archangel, she is promoted to lieutenant commander and given command of the Dominion, a sister ship to the Archangel. In this role, she is forced to fight her former crew. During the final battles, she openly disobeys the orders of Muruta Azrael, the Blue Cosmos extremist who has taken control of the Dominion. She orders her crew to abandon ship and tries to prevent Azrael from continuing his genocidal campaign. Azrael shoots her, and she dies alongside him when the Dominion is destroyed.

Key relationships include her ongoing friction and eventual mutual respect with Murrue Ramius, her professional but distant interactions with Kira Yamato, and her tragic obedience to Azrael, which she ultimately rejects. Her development moves from a strict, unyielding officer who places mission above all else to a woman who realizes that duty cannot justify atrocity. Notable abilities include her tactical expertise, her calm demeanor in crisis, and her skill in managing a warship’s combat information center. She is also known for her sharp, sometimes cold, decisiveness. Her story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unquestioning loyalty and the importance of moral judgment.
