Description
Muruta Azrael, also spelled Multa Azrael, is a central antagonist in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. He is a thirty-year-old Natural, meaning he is a genetically unmodified human. Azrael serves as the leader of Blue Cosmos, a militant anti-Coordinator organization that seeks the extermination of all Coordinators, genetically enhanced humans. His hatred stems from a childhood incident where a group of Coordinators beat him up, an event that left a lasting psychological scar. Additionally, he resented his mother for not having him genetically enhanced, and being struck after questioning her added to his deep-seated animosity.

Azrael comes from a wealthy and influential background. He is the heir of the Azrael family, which has long funded anti-Coordinator movements, and he is a prominent weapons manufacturer and the head of a major defense industry conglomerate. He also holds the position of director on the Defense Industry Association, giving him enormous sway over Earth Alliance military policy. His political and economic power allows him to bypass normal military hierarchies and issue direct orders to Earth Alliance commanders.

In terms of personality, Azrael is fanatical, self-centered, and ruthless, yet he also displays a childish, impulsive side. He is highly decisive when pursuing his goals, but his irrational hatred often overrides strategic considerations. His primary motivation is the total genocide of all Coordinators, whom he views as a threat to humanity’s natural order. He believes in a “pure blue world” without Coordinators and is willing to commit any atrocity to achieve that vision.

Azrael’s role in the story escalates from a behind-the-scenes manipulator to a direct participant in the conflict. He orchestrates the Bloody Valentine Tragedy, ordering the nuclear attack on the PLANT colony Junius Seven, which kills over 240,000 civilians and triggers the full-scale war. He later convinces the Earth Alliance to attack the neutral Orb Union when its leader refuses to cooperate, and he personally supervises the invasion to observe his new mobile suits in action. Azrael is also responsible for the creation of the “Extended” pilots—orphans who are biologically modified and brainwashed into brutal, obedient soldiers. He uses them as living weapons in battle.

Key relationships include his transactional dealings with Earth Alliance officers. He works closely with Captain Natarle Badgiruel aboard the battleship Dominion, though he ultimately disregards her objections and threatens her at gunpoint. Their conflict culminates in a struggle that leads to both their deaths when the Archangel destroys the Dominion. Azrael also commands the three Extended pilots—Clotho, Orga, and Shani—whom he treats as disposable tools. He has a brief interaction with Rau Le Creuset, who provides him with the captured Flay Allster; from her, Azrael obtains the data for the Neutron Jammer Canceller, which enables the Earth Alliance to launch nuclear weapons against the PLANTs.

Over the course of the story, Azrael becomes increasingly desperate and unhinged as his plans falter. After witnessing the destructive power of the GENESIS weapon, he resolves to wipe out all Coordinators at any cost, ordering a final nuclear strike. His desperation leads him to ignore reason and attempt to destroy the Archangel personally. He is killed when the Archangel returns fire, destroying the Dominion with him aboard.

Notable abilities of Azrael are not in personal combat but in manipulation, industrial power, and strategic ruthlessness. He has no piloting or military training; his influence comes from his control over weapons development, political lobbying, and his willingness to use extreme measures such as biological modification and weapons of mass destruction. He exemplifies the worst of humanity’s fear and intolerance, serving as the ideological opposite of the series’ more moderate characters.
