Description
Mu La Flaga is a central supporting character in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and later appears in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. He is a Natural-born pilot who serves as a lieutenant in the Earth Alliance before joining the crew of the Archangel. His background is marked by a troubled family history: his father, Al Da Flaga, despised him and favored a clone of himself, Rau Le Creuset, who would become Mu’s bitter enemy. Mu earned the nickname Hawk of Endymion after single-handedly shooting down five ZAFT mobile suits during the Battle of Endymion Crater, a feat that established his reputation as an ace pilot.

Personality-wise, Mu is carefree, boastful, and lighthearted, often making humorous remarks to lift the spirits of those around him. He carries an optimistic and confident attitude, encapsulated by his personal motto that he can make the impossible possible. Despite his casual demeanor, he becomes focused and serious in combat, displaying sharp tactical instincts. His motivations are rooted in a desire to protect his friends and fight for a world where people are judged by their actions rather than their genetic status as Naturals or Coordinators. He readily accepts Kira Yamato, a Coordinator, into the Archangel’s crew, showing his pragmatic and open-minded nature.

In the story, Mu begins as an escort for the delivery of the Gundam mobile suits and later takes refuge on the Archangel after his mothership is destroyed. He becomes a key protector of the vessel, piloting the TS-MA2mod.00 Moebius Zero mobile armor with exceptional skill. He later transitions to piloting the FX-550 Sky Grasper and the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, which Kira Yamato configures for Natural use. He participates in major battles including the defense of Orb and the final confrontation at Jachin Due. During the latter, he sacrifices himself to shield the Archangel from a positron cannon, disappearing in the explosion.

Mu survives but suffers total memory loss, and in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny he reappears under the identity Neo Roanoke, commander of the Earth Alliance special forces unit Phantom Pain. In this role, he is a masked antagonist, carrying out orders from Lord Jibril and manipulating enhanced pilots such as Stellar Loussier. Over time, fragments of his past personality resurface, and he makes sarcastic remarks reminiscent of his former self. His identity is eventually restored when he again protects the Archangel from a similar attack, this time piloting the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam. He rejoins his old allies and fights in the final stages of the war.

Key relationships define Mu’s arc. His closest bond is with Murrue Ramius, the captain of the Archangel; their mutual affection provides emotional stability amid the chaos of war. He acts as a mentor and big brother figure to Kira Yamato, encouraging him during difficult moments. His connection with Rau Le Creuset is unique and antagonistic: as a clone of Mu’s father, Rau was treated as the favored son, and the two share a telepathic-like ability to sense each other’s presence. This link turns their confrontations into deeply personal conflicts.

Mu’s notable abilities include extraordinary spatial awareness, which allows him to excel in piloting wire-guided gunbarrel-equipped mobile armors. He is a versatile combatant, proficient with both mobile suits and mobile armors, and often devises clever battlefield tactics. His skill in reading the flow of battle and his willingness to take risks make him a formidable ace. Despite his carefree exterior, he is a steadfast protector and a key figure in bridging the divide between Naturals and Coordinators, ultimately contributing to the larger struggle for peace.
