Description
Kotono Hayama is a 14-year-old middle school student and the central protagonist of Saint October. She lives at a church in Alkana City under the guardianship of Joshua, a priest who took her in after she was abandoned as a young child with no recollection of her past. Kotono works at the Kuroki Detective Agency alongside her close friend and classmate Natsuki Shirafuji, solving unusual cases around the city. Her ordinary life shifts dramatically when a kidnapping investigation leads her to a lost boy named Ewan, also referred to as Juan, who has no memories of his own. During a confrontation with the kidnapper, Juan bestows upon Kotono the power of the Justice tarot card, enabling her to transform into the black-garbed gothic lolita warrior known as Loli Black. In this form she gains heightened physical ability and wields a sword that she uses for decisive finishing strikes.
Kotono is naturally cheerful, a bit easily distracted, and occasionally absent-minded, yet she possesses a strong, unwavering sense of right and wrong. Her deepest motivation is to find her biological parents and understand why she was abandoned, a longing that drives her to become a detective in the first place. Because of her own past, she feels a profound empathy for Juan and is fiercely protective of him. Her key relationships define much of her journey: Joshua is the father figure who raised her with kindness; Natsuki is both her best friend and fellow detective, whose jealousy over Kotono’s devotion to Juan eventually gives way to a strengthening of their bond; and later she gains another ally in Misaki Hijiri, completing the trio of young detectives. Juan remains a central figure, as his mysterious connection to the antagonistic Reverse company and the larger scheme to bring about a judgment day gradually comes to light.
Over the course of the story Kotono grows from a somewhat clumsy but earnest orphan into a more self-assured and resilient young woman. She learns to balance her school life, detective work, and the burdens of her magical abilities, all while confronting the trauma of her abandonment. Despite the escalating threats she faces, her compassion and trust in justice remain constant, and she repeatedly demonstrates the courage to stand against forces that seek to harm the innocent or plunge the world into chaos.
