Description
Arata Imamiya is a supporting character who belongs to Guardian, a secret organization that seeks to protect the world by controlling supernatural threats. He is a hunter-type superhuman, a classification that reflects his specialized skills in tracking and combat. His abilities are less focused on raw power and more on practical application, as he is highly proficient in setting traps, investigating anomalies, and using firearms. He also demonstrates the capacity to throw ordinary objects with lethal force.
Arata has spiky auburn hair and purple eyes. He typically wears yellow tinted sunglasses, a gold chain necklace, a purple jacket over a black shirt, and black pants. His choice of clothing is described as being more appropriate for someone younger than his actual age, and he has a fondness for junk food, ramen, and curry.
In terms of personality, Arata is consistently cheerful and outspoken. He is never afraid to voice his thoughts, which can manifest as arrogance or a tendency to tease his comrades. He is also a realist, often judging situations from a cold, practical perspective. This pragmatic nature puts him in conflict with more idealistic characters, as he believes that difficult choices, including violence, are sometimes necessary for survival.
Arata shares a significant history with the protagonist, Kotarou Tennouji. They were classmates in middle school but never became friends. They later reunited when both joined a Guardian basic training camp. When Arata learned of Kotarou’s impressive background, he initially tried to become friendly with him. However, after Kotarou performed poorly and finished at the bottom of their class rankings, Arata became dismissive and began to bully him. Despite this, the two were placed on the same team along with Touka Nishikujou and another recruit named Nagai. During this training, Arata ranked 39th out of 42 recruits.
His role in the story varies across different narrative routes, but he consistently acts as an operative of Guardian. He is often shown monitoring Kazamatsuri City and participating in missions to hunt familiars or confront the opposing organization, Gaia. In one route, he is forced to fight and kill human summoners, an act that deeply disturbs Kotarou, to which Arata coldly responds that such actions are necessary for their survival. As the final battles approach, Arata acknowledges Kotarou's growth in strength and expresses regret for his past behavior, proposing that they become the strongest team together. However, this camaraderie is shattered when Kotarou betrays Guardian. In the ensuing confrontation, a confused and furious Arata helps to subdue Kotarou for interrogation.
Throughout the story, Arata has key relationships with several characters. He is a peer and teammate of Touka Nishikujou, with whom he has a tense and competitive dynamic. He also knows Nagai, a former Guardian member who later joins Gaia. His relationship with Kotarou is central to his development, evolving from distant classmate to bullying teammate, to grudgingly respected ally, and finally to betrayed comrade. In some storylines, he survives major conflicts and becomes part of a small group of survivors, taking on a leadership role.
