TV-Series
Description
Meroko Yui, originally known as Moe Rikyou when she was alive, is a shinigami, or death god, serving in the Death Pediatrics Ward. She is a member of the shinigami team Negi Ramen alongside her partner Takuto Kira. Meroko is a rabbit shinigami with long pink hair, magenta eyes, and long ears, and she can transform into an anthropomorphic bunny stuffed toy. She is also known for changing her appearance into other characters, often using the phrase "Mero Mero Change!". In appearance, she looks about sixteen years old.
Meroko was once a human teenage girl named Izumi Rio who suffered from a heart defect, leading to a lonely childhood. After receiving a heart transplant, she was consumed by guilt and took her own life, becoming a shinigami. As a human, she was also best friends with Fuzuki, who later became Mitsuki Koyama's grandmother. This past connection influences her involvement with Mitsuki.
Personality-wise, Meroko is energetic and often cheerful, but she has a hot temper and is prone to moodiness, especially regarding her relationship with Takuto. She is deeply infatuated with him, but her feelings are unrequited, leading to jealousy when Takuto shows affection toward Mitsuki. Despite her emotional volatility, she ultimately means well and tries to assist Mitsuki in her singing career, though her plans frequently backfire. She fears that being around Mitsuki might cause Takuto to recover his own human memories, which would cause him to become a ghost.
Meroko's central motivation is to be loved and accepted, particularly by Takuto. She also carries guilt from her past life and seeks a sense of purpose through her shinigami duties. Over the course of the story, she develops from a jealous, impulsive figure into a more empathetic one, facing her own tragic past and learning to care for Mitsuki as more than just a target. Her key relationships include her unrequited love for Takuto, her rivalry and eventual bond with Mitsuki, and her earlier connection to Fuzuki and Izumi, the latter being a former shinigami partner she once had a crush on.
Notable abilities include standard shinigami powers such as soul collection and guiding spirits, transformation into a stuffed bunny, and shape-shifting to imitate other people. She also possesses rabbit-like features that allow her to move quietly and quickly, and she is quite popular in terms of beauty, often winning contests when she participates.
