Description
Dr. Keiichi Wakaoji is a character whose life bridges the worlds of medicine and music. A kind and caring man, he is often depicted as easily flustered, yet his gentle demeanor belies a deep sense of responsibility and a sharp, perceptive mind. He is thirty years old, with golden-brown hair and eyes of nearly the same color.
Wakaoji serves as the primary physician for the young protagonist Mitsuki Koyama, overseeing her treatment for a serious illness. Before becoming a doctor, however, he lived a completely different life as the keyboardist and a producer for a popular band named Route:L. These two facets of his identity are deeply interwoven, as it is later revealed that he was a close friend of Mitsuki's late parents, who were also members of the band. This personal history forms the core of his motivation. He feels a profound sense of responsibility for Mitsuki's wellbeing, acting as a surrogate father figure in place of her deceased parents. He even visits her father's grave, having promised to look after Mitsuki as if she were his own daughter.
His role in the story evolves alongside Mitsuki's dream of becoming a singer. Initially, he has left the music industry behind, having chosen a different path after the disbandment of Route:L. He is highly skilled in his medical career, to the point of being considered the potential successor to the hospital director. However, his dedication to Mitsuki leads him to return to his musical roots. When she faces professional difficulties, he is persuaded to become the producer for her pop star persona, Fullmoon. This new role requires him to work part-time as a doctor so he can manage her music career, demonstrating the lengths to which he will go to support her and, in a sense, preserve the legacy of her parents.
Wakaoji has a key working relationship with Masami Oshige, Mitsuki's manager. Oshige was formerly a devoted fan of Route:L and holds a particular admiration for Wakaoji. While their dynamic is primarily professional and focused on protecting Mitsuki, the anime and manga differ in how their relationship is resolved. Throughout the series, he shows consistent growth by stepping out of his established identity as a doctor to embrace his past as a musician for the sake of another person. His notable abilities are, therefore, twofold: he is a competent and caring physician, and he possesses a deep, professional understanding of the music industry as a talented keyboardist and producer. His primary drive is always to act in Mitsuki's best interest, whether that means treating her illness or helping her achieve her dreams.
