Description
Paul Okamoto, also referred to as Okamoto Paul, is a supporting character in the manga and anime series Penguin no Mondai, known in English as A Penguin's Troubles. He is a boy who attends Kirikabu Elementary School as a classmate of the main character Beckham, and his most noticeable feature is a yellow mohawk hairstyle. He belongs to the Okamoto family, whose members also include five penguin siblings. The Okamoto children are true brothers and sisters, but they were separated from one another three years before the events of the story.
In his earliest appearances, Paul is extremely taciturn and speaks very little. He comes across as a mysterious, elusive boy who can appear and disappear without warning, and much of his humor comes from his quiet presence amid the energetic chaos around him. From the episode that introduces the character Johnny Kobayashi, Paul begins to talk more regularly, although he keeps his enigmatic and understated manner. His cleverness is also established on one occasion when he is the only student to score a perfect 100 on a difficult test, which briefly makes him a candidate to replace Beckham as the main character of the series.
The story does not give Paul detailed personal ambitions or a deep inner life. Like many characters in the series' gag-driven comedy, his actions are shaped by the needs of individual episodes, and his main function is to serve as an unpredictable and strange presence. It can transform into everyday objects such as bread or a telephone, it can apparently be removed from his head, and it is said to be worth 100,000 yen. Whenever Gordon comes selling goods door-to-door, Paul is shown wearing whichever item he likes on his hair, which adds to the running joke of the hair's flexible nature. Apart from the mohawk, he demonstrates strong academic ability through his perfect test score.
