Description
Heo Dangchan, also known as Naoto Yamada, is a central character in the anime Penguin no Mondai and serves as the best friend to the peculiar penguin, Beckham. As a student at Guteogi Elementary School, referred to in the original Japanese as Kirikabu Elementary School, he occupies the role of a straight man, or tsukkomi, providing a grounding presence in contrast to the bizarre and often nonsensical situations that unfold around him. He is portrayed as a fairly ordinary boy whose life becomes extraordinary following Beckham's arrival.

In terms of personality, Heo Dangchan is frequently cast as the bewildered observer, reacting with surprise and exasperation to the absurd antics of his penguin companion and the eccentric cast of characters that populate his world. While the narrative often showcases his flustered side, he is fundamentally a kind and loyal friend, as evidenced by his enduring bond with Beckham despite the constant trouble the penguin causes. His personal motivations are grounded in relatable childhood aspirations. He harbors a clear affection for his classmate Yumi, and he dreams of one day becoming a professional baseball player, goals that align with his role as a comparatively normal student.

His primary role in the story is that of the protagonist through whose eyes the audience experiences the story's humor. While Beckham is the chaotic catalyst, Heo Dangchan is the anchor, representing a normal world constantly being disrupted. His key relationship is undoubtedly with Beckham, as they are inseparable friends, with Dangchan often serving as the voice of reason. His relationship with Yumi also provides a subplot involving his personal life and unspoken feelings. Throughout the series, his development is subtle; he learns to navigate the increasing madness of his daily life, his initial shock giving way to a sense of resigned acceptance. Despite his ordinary exterior, his most notable ability is his resilience and capacity to remain the sole sensible person in a world that rarely makes sense, making him an effective comedic foil to the other characters.
