Description
Mute is a circus performer from France who appears in the second season of Kaleido Star, known as New Wings. He performs alongside his partner Alice as a duo act. Mute is introduced when Sora Naegino travels to France and encounters him during her journey. He is a competitor in the Circus Festival, a major event in the storyline. His primary motivation is to win the festival so that his performing group, composed of him and his friends, will gain official recognition and legitimacy.
At first, Mute presents himself as a friendly and approachable person. Sora considers him a friend and trusts him, especially while she is training for the difficult Angel's Maneuver under Yuri Killian. However, this trust is broken when Mute and Alice steal Sora's performance concept and costumes. They perform the stolen act before Sora has a chance to present it, revealing Mute's willingness to prioritize his group's success over friendship and fair competition. This betrayal deeply hurts Sora and marks a turning point in the story.
In terms of personality, Mute is ambitious and determined to achieve his goal of having his troupe acknowledged. He is resourceful enough to copy and adapt another performer's work, but his actions highlight a lack of integrity. He is not a malicious villain; rather, he is driven by desperation and a sense of responsibility to his friends, which leads him to make unethical choices. His role in the narrative is that of a rival who challenges Sora not only technically but also morally, forcing her to confront the darker side of competitive ambition.
Mute's notable abilities include acrobatic performance skills appropriate for a festival-caliber act, though specific routines are not detailed in available sources. His relationship with Alice is that of a close partner, and together they form a cohesive team. His development is limited; he appears primarily as an obstacle for Sora, and his arc resolves when Sora eventually overcomes the setback he caused. After the festival, Mute fades from the story.
