Description
Izumi Curtis is the master alchemist who taught Edward and Alphonse Elric, having accepted their plea to become her students when they were young boys. She lives in the southern Amestrian town of Dublith with her husband, Sig Curtis, where they operate a butcher shop. Despite possessing formidable abilities that rank her among the most powerful characters in the story, she consistently introduces herself simply as a housewife and takes visible pride in that identity.

The surface of a humble, caring woman belies a fearsome disposition that inspires genuine terror in her students; Edward and Alphonse become visibly shaken at the mere thought of angering her. She is prone to swift and explosive violence, often meting out physical punishments such as hitting, kicking, or throwing heavy objects when she is disgusted with someone's actions. This aggressive nature, however, stems from a place of deep frustration over the mistakes made by those she cares about and her overarching concern for their safety. While she has little tolerance for nonsense or disorder, she is also remarkably wise, perceptive, and always willing to help those in need, particularly children.

Izumi's background is marked by tragedy and immense personal loss. Hoping to revive a child who was stillborn, she committed the forbidden act of human transmutation. The attempt failed, and as the toll for seeing the Truth behind the Gate of Alchemy, she lost some of her internal organs, including the reproductive organs that would have allowed her to carry another child. This loss left her with a chronic condition that causes her to cough up blood during moments of physical exertion or emotional stress. As an unexpected consequence of seeing the Truth, she gained the rare and powerful ability to perform alchemy without drawing a transmutation circle, instead merely pressing her palms together to initiate a transmutation.

Her own training as an alchemist was unconventional. At eighteen, she traveled to the harsh northern region of Briggs Mountain to study under a famous alchemist, only to discover that the elderly man she found was in fact a martial artist and the alchemist had already died. As a test, she was told to survive alone on the mountain for a month with only a machete. She not only endured the brutal conditions, extreme weather, and attacks from bears and wolves, but also raided military outposts for supplies, creating a local legend of a mysterious mountain woman that would persist for years. This experience forged her incredible martial arts prowess and gave her the philosophical understanding that one is all and all is one, a core tenet she later passed on to the Elric brothers.

Izumi's role in the story is that of a guide, a moral anchor, and a hidden powerhouse. After the Elric brothers' own failed human transmutation to revive their mother, she severely punished them but also embraced them with profound compassion, afterward declaring that their relationship would shift from teacher and students to that of friends, allowing them to meet as equals. Despite her disapproval of Edward becoming a State Alchemist, she continues to watch over them and provide crucial aid whenever necessary. As someone who has witnessed the Truth, she is designated by the homunculus Father as one of the five human sacrifices required for his nation-spanning plan. In the final battle, she fights alongside the Northern forces of Briggs, directly confronts the homunculus Sloth, and participates in the assault on the Central command, proving that even with her compromised health, her combat abilities remain devastatingly effective.

The key relationships in her life define her actions. Her marriage to Sig is one of deep, quiet affection and mutual respect; they work side by side in their shop and fight back-to-back in battle. She loves Edward and Alphonse as if they were her own sons, a bond forged through the shared trauma of having attempted human transmutation and the subsequent understanding of its horrific consequences. She also shares a significant connection with Van Hohenheim, the Elric brothers' estranged father, who encounters her on a train, uses his unique abilities to rearrange her damaged internal organs to improve her blood circulation, and enlists her help in the final confrontation against Father.

Throughout the narrative, Izumi experiences a subtle but important development. Initially, she is haunted by the belief that she attempted to bring back her deceased son, a failure that caused her immense guilt and pain. After Edward tells her that what she transmuted was not truly her child, she is finally able to find a measure of closure and release that burden. Later, Hohenheim's medical alchemy stabilizes her condition, relieving the chronic bleeding that had long plagued her and allowing her to fight at her full potential during the story's climax. After the final conflict concludes, she returns home to Dublith with her husband, resuming her simple life as a butcher and housewife while continuing to serve as a beloved mentor to the Al Elric brothers.
